Getting to Asheville
Hi All,
This is probably a stupid question... but I am not familiar with the area, so plead ignorance :-)
I am thinking I need to get back down there (from CT) to check out the counties around Asheville (Buncombe)... mainly Madison & Yancey. But rather than drive this time, I'm thinking to fly and rent a car. Never been to the airport there. Does it make sense to fly into Asheville? Or is it better to fly to Charlotte and drive from there?
Appreciate any input!

By all means, fly to Asheville if you can get a flight from where you live! No reason to fly into Charlotte and have to drive all that way

One thing that might affect your decision is the cost of flying into Asheville. Typically it is much cheaper to fly into Charlotte, but you can get good deals from time to time. I live in Asheville and I would say about half the time I fly I fly from here and the other half from Charlotte, depending on the cost.

Unless you can get a direct flight into Asheville, you are better off driving, it will be quicker. My husband has flown into Charlotte a couple times, and the bad service and delays are unbelievable. He gets stuck at that airport for HOURS AND HOURS!
I would avoid it at all cost unless absolutely necessary.

another option...
Hi all
You might want to consider Greenville/Spartanburg (GSP) as an option. I've had several clients fly into the area experiences with GSP have been good. Charlotte (CLT) tends to have higher fares d/t the lack of competition for US air, however with the addition of Airtran and Jetblue that is starting to change. If were able to fly into GSP it's not too bad of a drive and gives you an opportunity to see a little more.
Good Luck!

We've flown in and out of Charlotte many times and have never had any major hang ups to date. We usually use that airport due to the cost being lower.

I agree with Gypsychic....
Here from Tampa area we can easily drive to Asheville in under 10 hours, only a couple of hours more than the time it takes us to drive to airport, check-in, wait, fly,(2 hours on Worlds Worst Airline, US AIR) wait, get luggage, wait for rental bus, go to car rental, wait, and then drive from Charlotte to Asheville. Plus we go on our schedule not theirs.
Although, we now have the option of Allegiant Air from St. Pete Airport to Spartenburg for $39 one way. Now that may be worth the hassle.

We fly direct from Chicago to Knoxville (a one hour and 15 minute flight) and drive the 1 hour and 45 minutes into Madison County - through Hot Springs - it's an easy drive and Knoxville Airport is not crowded - If we fly to Asheville we have to go through Cincinnati or Charlotte - or god forbid Atlanta!

The drive from Greenville/Spart (that's South Carolina just so you know) is easy and very pleasant. The airport itself is small, manageable and enjoyable as well. I do know that there are direct flights from Newark to Asheville but I'm not sure how feasible getting to Newark is for you from CT.
E&B, thanks for the tip regarding the St. Pete airport flights. I didn't even think to look. Planning to relocate as soon as I can sell my house here (St. Pete).

If you're checking out Yancey county, it's just over an hour to Burnsville. From Charlotte, it's almost two and a half. So says the Google...
