Maybe if you will ask YAC, he will put it up at the top of the page where just Raleigh posts are and Charlotte and larger areas. It isn't a bad idea considering that North Carolina is such a long state and the climate in particular varies greatly in the mountains from the coast. Somebody, does YAC have a private messager thing?

Maybe you can, we live in Houston and want to move to mountains. Have you always lived in NC? Where is the best place? Asheville is expensive. It seems jobs are hard to find. We love Waynesville area. Do you know about a city called Marion? Thanks

Marion is very scenic and rural. I think it is 35 miles from Asheville. I like that part of the state very much and would hope to live in the mountains one day myself. I have passed thru Marion many times on my way towards the NC/TN border to go backpacking and hiking at a BEAUTIFUL area - the Roan Mountain highlands. So incredibly gorgeous, but all very rural up there. Marion is like right off I40 below the Blue Ridge Parkway. It should be more affordable than Ashville for sure.

My parents grew up in Marion. I lived there for 5 years. My parents retired back there, and my mom still lives there.
What do you want to know?
You can PM me if that is more convenient.

It is in a great new community growing near Deep Gap in one of the less "trampled" areas of North Carolina... you might want to check it out if you are looking for an area to move!

Marion and that area is very nice, scenic etc. Not much there...yet. What I would caution about living in Marion is that if you need or want to commute to Asheville, for shopping, hospitals, etc., I-40 W as you know is a major east/west route with many trucks day and night. The grade and curves heading west through the Old Fort, Black Mountain areas, up the mountain to Asheville could be why Marion is not heavily populated. It can be a brutal drive any time of the year. So many accidents. From Waynesville to Asheville is also heading through the mountain range, although maybe a 25 mi. ride or so to Asheville, it can also be steep. Best to live north of Asheville, Mars Hill, Marshall, Madison County etc. Forget South of Asheville, it's a mess with I-26 as the main route and traffic is getting as bad or worse than Asheville. Or, go further south to Greenville SC and have the best of both worlds. Shopping, low housing cost, plenty to do, lots of culture, great hospitals and yet in the foothills.

There is such an influx of traffic and tourists, it makes driving anywhere around Asheville no fun.

I think that the Marion area is one of WNC's overlooked gems and it has great potential. It is right on the edge of the Blue Ridge, Lake James is in the back yard, and real estate prices are vastly lower than they are either west or north. Marion is no one's cultural capital but it has a Lowe's, a Wally World, a hospital and many restaurants. Asheville is only 35 miles away on I-40. The economy is in transition as the mills depart but there's a lot of development around the Lake and further south in McDowell County. Nice people, too. PM me if you have specific questions and I'd be happy to help you.

As I've posted in other threads, we are moving from Tampa Bay area to Marshall, Madison County and can't wait. Its so different.... Folks are friendly, they wave at you, the roads are not trashed, it's a timewarp in DT Marshall..it is Sooooo great.

Florida has become a ratsnest of the rude and crude, insurance and property tax hikes and overcrowding beyond belief. I have been here 27 years, have watched this area destroy itself with mismanaged growth.
