This is bear time so be alert when in the woods but no need to carry a gun black bears rarely attack people. The North Carolina mountains have more than bears, coyotes live here too. Last night they were yipping and howling on the ridge above us. Our dogs were going nuts (from inside the house). It was something to hear, we stood on the porch thinking what a wild spine tingling sound it is.... so amazing to be able to hear it and know we share this space with wild creatures.

My dogs are completely silent when the coyotes howl. But when the wolves (a pack has mysteriously shown up in the area) pipe up it's Game On! They're Border Collies, so I guess it's instinct.

Several bears have been spotted on 221 from Blowing Rock and Holloway Mtn road, a short cut thru to Foscoe from Church road. One they say is huge. Footprints were seen in a friends local garden. They also eat at the dump that is on 221. This could be the same bears that Ani was talking about because it would be in that range.

Hey Catbirds! YES!!! This has been the local talk. One neighbor actually caught a bear on the deck . . . there have been photos of bears coming right up to houses this summer, wh/ is not really that surprising or unusual when the houses are out in the woods as ours is . . . but the larger bear(s) are the ones that folks are most concerned about.

Give 'em a wide berth!

Oh wow. Wolves? What region of the mountains are you in, Easily? Coyotes are all over this state - even in suburban committees - but wolves. That is serious stuff w/ real concern in re: to livestock and pets. Coyotes are bad enough . . .

There are NO wolves in WNC. The ONLY wolves found in NC are at the coast. Red Wolf in North Carolina

Maybe its a neighbors dog or a stray. There are wolf-dog pets around and a sanctuary in fairview.

After finding two fairly large calling cards on our deck we have purchased one of those wildlife cameras to see what might be visiting. From scat pictures we assume it is bear so we'll see what shows up. Of course now that we have it our visitor probably won't come back. But regardless think we'll have fun putting it in different places to see what's out there. Just a side note there has been an outbreak of distemper in Raccoons in this area and have seen a couple acting ill and one died in my neighbors yard. Very sad.

I have a ranch in Texas I know what coyotes are. It's possible they were a wolf-dog, or dog-coyote hybrid. Parks and Wildlife has a theory though. Most likely some dumba** had them as pets. There were only about 2 or 3 of them and we heard them for just a couple nights. Definitely not a pure bred dog. There are wolves in the Smokies, not a lot but there are a few, our area is more than a bit out of where they usually are though, Eastern TN.. all you have to do is google.

Interesting read on how they monitor them in the Smokies Quarterly.

The above report is for the Northeastern Region I was trying to find the report for the TN area, but the edit time limit went out.. There is a similar report for The Great Smoky National Park in the TN area on the few wild ones out there.

But yeah, Wolves aren't a threat at all. Just the people that think they make cool pets are.

.

Wolves were released in the smokies as a part of the smokies red wolf recovery in the early-mid 90's. By the end of decade they had all died off and the project was cancelled. Working as a research biologist were I work closely with USFWS I have heard talk another attempt in the future after more evaluations. As of right now there are no known wolf packs in WNC.

If you have solid proof, aka pictures, im sure the USFWS would love to see them.....
