I didn't say whether I have a special needs child or not, but there is a difference. Handicapped people don't choose their handicap, but you did choose to marry out of your race. That there might be occasional problems for you and your family shouldn't have come as a great surprise.

Interesting that there are more politically liberal states at the top of the list, and more politically conservative states toward the bottom. I wonder if the authorities in the high-ranking states are more inclined to report crimes as "hate-based" than those in low-ranking states.

Hard to say, but there are some conservative states in the top 10 of problem states, such as Arkansas, Montana and Virginia. I would also imagine the individual state's definition of "Hate Crime" could also play a role since most crimes are prosecuted under state law as opposed to Federal law. Of course, the Feds can step in and investigate/prosecute regardless of the state outcome if they wish.

I am born in Kansas, lived in LA for 20 yrs, moved BACK to Kansas, and considering North Carolina, as well. I am 1/2 white and 1/2 Cherokee, and my mate is Black. A person who has lived in one place may not understand the question as well as those of us who have traveled, and had the opportunity to live in other places...Life has enough BS in it just to survive, and since there are options avail. I, too, would want to know the answer to the question...lets face it, the Klan started in the South and they still exist...My mate and I do not want to court trouble, nor feel uncomfortable...we want peace. Jim, hopefully you are there, now...do you like it ? Do you see many mixed couples ?

For what it's worth, I've traveled over most of the US and parts of Canada, Mexico and Europe. I still think the expectation that you mixed-race couples have, that you will be lynched or otherwise harmed in North Carolina is based on your own ignorance and your own bigotry against Southern whites.
I don't know where the original poster has gone, but I can tell you for a fact that I see mixed-race couples or the progeny of mixed-race unions every time I am out among the public in Asheville. The couples are usually black males and white females who look to be drug users and the mixed-race progeny are usually of black/white mixture and alone in the company of middle-class looking white women. I have rarely if ever seen the black father with these mixed children. I have never seen these people harmed in any way!
But if you people have found such acceptance of your mixed-race lifestyle in other places, why don't you stay there? If you think so little of the South, why don't go someplace else? The Southern racist question is insulting, especially when it gets repeated over and over.
FBI statistics show that you will be safer living in any Southern majority white town or city in the US than if you are living in any majority black town or city in the US, no matter what the color of you and your spouse.

I live in NYC and I think white ethnics are just as, if not more, bigoted than WASPS. Don't know why they feel they're better than others... anyway, I don't want to get off topic. But I stand by my first sentence.

All it takes is a couple of times and you start getting a dim view of people, and maybe a little paranoid.
But, when I asked the question I guess I didn't realize that people would think I am stereotyping, and I didn't think there would be people on the website that would be "stung" by the line of questioning. My sincere apologies, and it's the last thing I wanted to do is insult others.

I'm happy you asked the question about mixed races. My kids are mixed (i'm spanish and white, their dad is black). I'm trying to move to N.C. and thats the first thing I started asking also, Maybe other people don't have to deal with racism and thats why they take it to the heart. My family comes first and I'm from N.Y. thats a very diverse place so of course you want your kids to be treated the same. I'm right there with you 100%. GOOD QUESTION!!!

I think that the only reason mixed couples ask that question about the south is because of stories we heard i'm not from down their and i've asked the race question before. Its not to insult anyone its just the whole fact of not knowing and as far as staying where we are from, we're trying to do better for ourselves and our families. I don't think its out of disrespect at least not when I ask.

My family and I are still relatively new to Asheville. But we were very surprised at the lack of ethnic / racial diversity. I may be one of those "outsiders" (even though I have strong familial ties to NC) but I believe I can say you will most likely experience some racism if for no other reason because there are so few people of Asian descent in Asheville.
Downtown and close to the city limits, as someone wisely noted, will be much more accepting. Please note though, kids in the city schools come from different areas. While downtown walking about you should be treated with respect, I would assume (based on observation of kids in my north Asheville neighborhood) they will be more likely to be singled out for teasing. If for no other reason than because they are "different". I am so sorry to say that, but believe it to be true.
I know of some educators in the city schools who are racist. They may very well be from other areas but does it matter if they are teaching your kids?
I've heard good things about some of the "Arts" or are they "magnet / charter" schools? in Asheville. These would most likely be your best bet over the "regular" public schools.
I'm white and my kids are in college. I taught in a large urban area and my kids went through the same public school system. I would never teach in the schools here and sadly, I don't think I would send my kids to the regular Asheville City Schools. I do think Asheville is growing more accepting, but it is a small area and there is lots of room for growth.....
