I know a lot of people can't afford to have their dog fixed and some on here might know someone in such a situation. I wanted to pass this around: Operation: Fix-A-Dog | Brother Wolf Animal Rescue (http://www.bwar.org/fixadog - broken link)

One of my rescued girls came to me with mammary cancer due to not being spayed at an early age and breed irresponsibly. I hope this helps to at least prevent a few similar cases in the asheville area.

Thank you for posting this Saucy. A lot of people don't realize that EARLY spaying and neutering helps to prevent cancers in both male and female dogs.

There are several similar programs, one run through the Humane Alliance. They offer low cost spay/neuter programs and then Animal Compassion Network has a fund set up to pay most of the low cost, in some cases perhaps all of the cost. Humane Alliance will also do low-cost vaccinations at the time of the spay/neuter.

People have options if they just know where to look or ask. One of the big problems in this area is some segment of pet owners just don't care.

Thanks so much for sharing this information! In my job, I travel all over WNC & parts of TN & SC. I just picked up my 8th kitten to foster over the past 8 months. At the Brother Wolf site, they also have this info for cats:

(Btw, if you know of anyone who's thinking about getting a new cat, this one I have now is stunning & a real purr-monster!! She's a long haired calico & the first one I've fostered who is already tame. She's very affectionate. I'm guessing she's about 14 weeks old.)
