Default Police salary in Asheville

Hi, we are currently considering a move from the Greensboro area to Asheville. My husband is a police officer and we are looking into what the salary of a police officer is like in Asheville. He has 4 yrs experience, a bachelors degree, intermediate BLET certification, LEBA certificate, and SRT member experience. Our main concern is wondering if he would be taking a paycut by moving, especially since houses are so mich more expensive there. Also, does APD allow lateral transfers or would he have to start over?

One of my friends that works out at our gym is on the APD, and IIRC, he said they start out at about 30 or 31k. not just about the whole transfer thing though.

That was my main concern. He is currently around 44k with his 4 yrs in. If he had to start over and take a pay cut to their current starting salary then the move as a whole wouldn't make too much sense. I am from the area and am currently a stay at home mom, our goal of moving is to allow me to finish my masters and while I am in school the kids can stay with the grandparents for the day vs being in daycare all day.

In most government jobs, when you change agencies, you start over as far as salary is concerned. It's just how it is... at least at the non-federal level.

Shouldn't finding job openings come first? You've started contacting the various law enforcement agencies, both in Asheville itself and in the general area: Asheville City Police, Buncombe County Sheriff, Biltmore Forest Police, Weaverville Police Department, Hendersonville Police, Henderson County Sheriff, Brevard Police, Transylvania County Sheriff, etc., etc?. If their Web sites don't show pay ranges, you could certainly get those by phone.

When I entered the Foreign Service many yers ago, my pay scale was based in part on what I was already making, but that could be an anomaly. Some departments might pay more for those with more experience, but you'd have to check each department. And, as noted, the exact pay is irrelevant without the job. If Asheville is your first choice and he can get hired there and the pay is right, great. If not, then you can expand your search area and see what you can find. I don't know how far away from Asheville itself you're willing to look. Good luck!

GOOG: "police salary Asheville, NC"
Pages of links on the topic. A cursory glance showed the Chief job open...
Not big bucks, for any of the cops.

maybe not in initial salary but they get loads of opportunities for overtime, which is time and half.
