Apartment Village v House rental for family? (Asheville: for sale, apartments)

Hi
We will need a minimum one year rental in Asheville, with separate in law suite for my mum. These seem hard to find so we are also looking at apartment villages where we could rent 2 apartments instead.
Some seem to have great facilities like pool, kids playground, but are they really suitable for children? They seem to have really mixed reviews on the internet.here in England apartments don't come with facilities like this, they are just the apartments and perhaps a shared garden.
We will of course visit some but i want to narrow down the search and be aware of any pitfalls?

Will look at the links. Still aiming for February, am in touch with the school you put me on to, thanks! Think we will have to rent furnished for a month until our belongings arrive, still trying to work out shipping belongings v buying new once there! Main priority is gonna be finding my husband some work!
