Hi,
I'm thinking about moving to Morganton and was wondering what there is to do around town (I can drive to Hickory or go hiking on weekends, but probably not something I'd do on the weekdays). Just wondering about things like coffeeshops, bookstores, activities to keep me entertained for a couple of hours after work. Plus, any other secrets I should know about the town? Drove thru it a few months ago as I was touring the state, and loved the proximity of mountains and water. I appreciate any advice you have to offer! |

This weekend in Morganton is the annual Historic Morganton Festival. It begins on Friday and lasts through Saturday night. There will be food, crafts, live music, lots of venders selling merchandise (some really neat stuff), and all kinds of things to do. There are a couple of coffee shops uptown. Hope this is helpful.

Hickory has a nice little German Restaurant.
Old German Schnitzel Haus Oktoberfest starts there on September 21., live entertainment every Friday and Saturday. Hope this helps too... |

I grew up in Morganton, and honestly, there's not a whole lot to do here. More recently, we've gotten a couple of coffee shops. There's a good one downtown by the courthouse. There's a couple of movie theaters and a few restaurants open late. In the past two years or so, there are more options for nightlife. There's a nice restaurant called Churchill's that has a small bar downstairs where they have sushi on Wed and Thurs nights, plus live music a few nights a week. There's also a brewery that has live music, but it's only open on Friday nights. I'm not sure if it's seasonal or not.
In the summer, the big thing to do is Friday night on the square, which is a live musical act (usually country or something similar) in the open air and everyone brings blankets and spends the evening walking around and hanging out downtown. As far as shopping, there are a couple of cute shops (More Lace, Kitchen Connection, some small downtown shops) that are fun to look around in. Also, Walmart, Kmart, etc, but nothing you'd really want to do heavy shopping in. You'd need to go to Hickory or Asheville for that. Overall, people here really make up things to do--get togethers, dinners, parties. There's some small town politics etc, but overall, the people are friendly and accepting. Hope this helps! |

Golly...sounds like my kind of place I would want to relocate to. I'm so tired of this Texas rat race.
