The only thing about the Ocoee River Gorge is that (to me) it feels like an arduous non-relaxing route. It's beautiful, but you need your wits about you.
I do have friends in Blairsville who go to Exit One all the time for mall shopping. Yes, you could drive to the outskirts of Atlanta to find someone.
As far as hairdressers closer to home, Blue Ridge is a better bet too. They have so many transplants there and lots of them are up from Atlanta.

I always tell my friends who want to know where we are, we're two hours from Asheville, two from Atlanta, two from Choo-Choo, and two from Greenville/Spartanburg.
It will take you about two to get to Cumming Alpharetta as well. If you go straight over the mountain it can be slow going, plus you have traffic and signals in Dahlonega and when you hit 400. If I need to do major shopping and can't find it in Murphy/Blairsville/Blue Ridge, I'll hit 515/575 down to Canton (88 miles from our place) or exit 1 in Kennesaw (100). On one occasion I went to Dalton but really didn't find much.
It's not so much the mileage distance around here as it is the terrain and roads. I got behind a truck coming through the Nantahala last week coming from Ashville to Haysville and at times we were only going about 20 mph. No big deal, but you just have to remember... your not in any big hurry when you live in the mountains...
I'd also keep looking for a hairdresser closer to home... it may take some searching, but you'll find that diamond in the rough? There are lots of salon's in Blairsville, I tried 3 before I found a keeper... and I'm very very pleased....

My mom worked in nj several years and use to make fun of her coworkers who would go crazy over bagels. I appreciate fresh ones with seeds and creamcheese, more healthy than biscuits from hardees I guess, but hard to appreciate bagels when you grew up eating biscuits and gravy. Anything fresh and warm I'll take, like maws country bread, I can eat that with anything.

Murphy and the county
Okay, I'm not trying to be funny here, but what the heck is up with the crime stats in Murphy? Something looks very odd here! I have seen some promising homes in the Murphy area, but I am worried re my personal safety as a single youngish female living alone. I am very surprised by the city data stats for assaults and thefts and the extremely large number of sex offenders. Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm currently renting in Ellijay and there is nothing remotely like this here or in the neighboring towns!

I have no idea because I've never heard this before. I lived in Marble before 2005 and never felt unsafe back then.

People move to Small Town America and then complain that it doesn't have the things they think are important. Pizza, chinese, malls, shopping, shopping, and more shopping. If these are the things that are truly important to you, don't move to a small town.

Correction: Shoebooties doesn't sell to individuals. But, Ingles makes a pretty good bagel.
Found someone in Murphy who does a pretty good haircut, but I nearly had to sign a release to get her to cut it as short as I wanted. 3 cuts later, she finally accepted that I want it SHORT. Now if she would just agree with me on color, I'd be happy.
