Wilkesboro, North Carolina...info please
We noticed that Lowes has jobs in Wilkesboro, NC.
What is the approx. population of Wilkesboro? What is the nearest major city?
What is there for a family to do in Wilkesboro? Is there anything for adults like concerts, the theatre, museums?
Anything else you can tell me about Wilkesboro?

Wilkesboro has a population of 3,159. The closest major city is Winston-Salem which is around a hour away via US 421.

Merlefest North Carolina - Wilkesboro, North Carolina
Town of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina
The town touts itself as the gateway to the mountains. Another 30-45 minutes on 421 brings you to Boone. In the other direction, 421 takes you to W-S, as MM34B stated. It's a 4-lane highway, btw, so you can zip back and forth to each location quite readily. Hickory is ~40 miles away, actually closer than Winston-Salem, and has most of the big box shopping, though a mall that is only about 1/4 the size of Hanes Mall in W-S.
Merlefest is the biggest event, followed by the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival. Kerr Scott Lake brings in fishermen and campers. Other than that, it's just kind of a small, foot-of-the-mountains town. The emphasis seems to be on outdoors types of recreation.
If you are looking to apply for a job at Lowe's, make sure of the certainty that it will stay in Wilkesboro if that's where you want to settle. I know the old mall was turned into their data center, but headquarters was moved some years back to Mooresville (~60 miles away).

You know Lowes headquarters is not in NWilkesboro anymore?
The population for the county in 2003 was 66,140.
Wilkes has 2 small towns in a beautiful county. Friendly people with some wariness of newcomers. Not the greatest place to live (because of town size) but certainly not the worst. Depends on what you want and what you are open to receive.
Just do a search on both towns and you will find much information.
There is one movie theatre in the county. Most people go to the Jonesville movie theatre which is a 30 minute drive.
The county has a rich heritage in old-time/bluegrass music and with Wilkes Community College, hosts one of the premiere americana festivals in the world known as Merlefest. The college's Walker Center offers music performances throughout the year. There is a local theatre that is active and even performed off Broadway late last year. Nice greenway along the Yadkin River. There is a local heritage museum at the old county courthouse. Appalachian State University is 30 minutes away which offers other concert, theatre and dance performances.
What else would you like to know?

I am moving to Wilkesboro in 2 weeks---I am so excited!!
I have 4 children and my husband will be working at the Walgreens across from the hospital. We have found a lovely house to rent in the Woodfield Subdivision which is close to everything. I have heard nothing but good things about the schools in the area. My question is this: Does anyone know of any Christian Contemporary churches nearby?

Not close by, but check our First Assembly of God in Winston Salem. There is a caravan (ride sharing) out of Wilkesboro. They have a huge youth group.
Also you are not too far from Mt Airy - Who is the guy who does Matlock and was the sherrif - Andy griffith! His church is at the intersection of Mt Airy with the tracks and the mill - turn away from the mill. It is small but spiritual.

Cornerstone Church holds services in the old YMCA building btwn the Wilkesboros. That would be the most contemporary in the area and it's not far from where you are staying.
Best wishes in your move and I hope you like it there.
