Don't forget to pick up a "Save Chimney Rock Park" bumper sticker and register to vote ASAP.

The November 7th election will have a ballot question on raising the permissible building height in downtown Hendersonville for high-rise condos. The Mayor, city council and out-of-state developers want to raise the height, but apparently the residents don't. Should be an interesting election.

No, the current building height restriction only applies to a few blocks of the historic downtown area. Developers are free to build higher anywhere else within the city limits.

Lake Lure is where they filmed "Dirty Dancing".

Hi Y'all,

Now we're talking about my "neck of the woods". I grew up in Rutherford County and after living in the "urban jungle" of Charlotte NC for 10 years my husband and I moved back here to raise our children. WE LOVE IT. "Dirty Dancing" was filmed here as well as "Firestarter" and "Last of the Mohicans". The Lake Lure/Chimney Rock area is in my opinion one of NC's hidden treasures and I hope with all my heart that the park isn't bought by a developer.

Congratulations and Welcome

Living in Southern California, I had to laugh at the comment "the urban jungle of Charlotte"!! Charlotte is a lovely city - I have spent much time there and in comparison with LA, hardly a jungle.

Glad to hear so many things about Hendersonville- I am thinking of relocating to NC and this is the town that kept coming up on sites like ****** after answering questions. It just sounds so.. well... NICE! and for us Jersey people- the taxes are so low I have to laugh! (cause we cry here when we get our bills!)

Crime rate in Hendersonville is DOUBLE the national Average.

A population of 11K and they have 20-30 rapes a year?

Sometime is wrong with that city.

We would be interested in knowing where these statistics come from.
This info is what I was able to find on city-data concerning Hendersonville, but it is 3 years old. Hard to believe things would have changed that much in 3 years though. I went to look because 20 rapes sounded like a lot to me in Rohan's post.

Crime in Hendersonville (2003):
2 murders (18.5 per 100,000)
5 rapes (46.3 per 100,000)
22 robberies (203.8 per 100,000)
67 assaults (620.5 per 100,000)
124 burglaries (1148.5 per 100,000)
766 thefts (7094.6 per 100,000)
49 auto thefts (453.8 per 100,000
