The U.S. Forest Service is considering purchasing one of four land tracts to become part of Pisgah National Forest. The Forest Service has $1 million set aside for the effort.
They include: a 76-acre Mills River in holding adjacent to North Mills River Campground and under threat of housing development; 225 acres in Caldwell County with unique high-elevation habitats and large tracts of old-growth forest; 295 acres on Mulberry Creek in Caldwell County with a high percentage of riparian and wildlife habitat; and 136 acres on the Roan Mountain National Trails adjacent to the Appalachian Trail.
