I only have one friend in the Asheville Metro Area who uses AT&T, but he hasn't had them long enough to have an opinion yet.

Verizon still seems to be the carrier of choice in this area of the mountains. Something about Verizon using 850 MHz and 1800 MHz. Most of the other carriers use only 1800 MHz. I'm told 850 MHz works much better in the mountain area.

I have an AT&T cell for work, and a Sprint for personal use. Both are OK, but often drop out on heavily travelled roads such as the Blue Ridge Parkway (in Asheville, not out of town) and in spots on Hendersonville Road. I've also heard that Verizon is the best in the area.

AT&T depends on marketing to promote an image of greatness. But in reality, they don't have the best coverage. Other carriers took them to court to challenge their statements, "Fewer Dropped Calls" and "More Bars in More Places." The court agreed that their statements are indeed factual because AT&T currently has more cell sites than other carriers.

However, sadly for us users, all those cell sites aren't in the right places. Therefore, other carriers, with properly located sites, do a better job of coverage, even if they don't have "more bars in more places."

If you're looking for a new cellular provider, check the Florida Cellular Review Page, or How to Switch Cellular Carriers.
