Even down here I noticed a few maple leaves were starting to change a bit and it hasn't been nearly as hot as it was this time last year. Always a plus.
Beautiful evening here at 3500 or so feet elevation (near Valle Crucis and Foscoe, up on a "hill") The crickets and even a few cicadas are chirping! I heard a tree frog singing late last night.
I thought it was going to rain today but it never did. Just a few minutes of soft, tiny drops while I was out tramping around the woods w/ the furkid. Just now, when bidding the kids good night, I realized a soft, barely perceptible rain was once again gently falling. I sit here now and hear a few drops hitting the tin on my roof (exhaust cap/woodstove).
A perfect summer evening in the mountains! It is 59 d. here this evening. Just right for a light quilt on the bed!
Leaves are starting to fall here, but nothing most folks would notice very much. I get up each morning and sweep the decks and have noticed how what only a few weeks ago were rhododendron pods and leaves are now poplar and oak. But not many! A few have yellowed and drifted down.
I haven't gotten the new roof put on. I had part of the money saved up but the summer has been one escapade after another with a tooth that has cost me about $3500 so far. This is a shake roof and they tell me the cost has skyrocketed, so it is going to be even more expensive as we go forward. The bundles have gone from $220 to $270 each just this summer. Dear me. (Yes, shake roofs are required per our covenants). Hubby is loathe to take any money out of savings but I don't know . . . I don't think it is going to get cheaper and those shakes are only gonna get older in the meantime . . . no problems YET but . . .
So I am truly hoping for a beautiful Fall . . . and a mild winter . . . for many reasons!
Hate to rub it in, but it was 56 degrees this morning at 8:00 a.m. and is currently a lovely 74 at 1:30 p.m.
Summer left the mountains about a week ago where I am. Love love that fall feeling we're getting now!!
Ive heard..
So that settles it, Im gassing up the plane and buzzing up for a week or two. Actually Texas hasnt been that bad this summer, few 100+ days, but Im tired of sweating without excercising.
I will be in the Cherokee area Oct 1-5. Hopefully I will be able to see some decent fall colors.
