long time lurker here hello!
Hi everyone-
I've been reading through the city-data the past couple of months and just wanted to step out from the shadows. There's a lot of good information here! I've been researching our impending move to NC (next fall) and this forum is on my bookmark toolbar
We're getting tired of being in Michigan (Kalamazoo, specifically) and are planning a move together at long last. Based on what I've learned here, NC has welcomed a lot of midwestern transplants. I've only been to NC a handful of times, most recently visiting my sister who was living in Seagrove a few years ago. I was enchanted by the people, the climate, and the wonderful rolling mountainous horizons.
Just wanted to say hi, and that I am going to start pestering you all with questions from now on
Jess

I moved from Wisconsin to Western NC. The mountains and people are absolutely amazing. I've lived here just over a year and I still think it was the best decision of my life! I bought a van from craigslist, packed up, threw everything in the van and left. I risked a lot and I will never regret it.

Thanks for all the replies and the welcome, everyone!
Quert, you make moving sound so easy! I wish I could throw caution to the wind like that, but for better or for worse I am an obsessive list-maker and researcher and want to make 100% sure that our impending move will be successful. I guess this boils down to having a decent-sized savings and, if possible, that one of us can land a job before/shortly after we land.
Carolinablue4u, I'm interested in your story, too. Can I ask why you left GR? And what have you found in Blowing Rock to keep you there? What kind of work do you do?
We are planning on taking a trip through NC and maybe VA sometime in the early spring and I'm coming up with a list of the places we should scout out. My main requirement is that there be peace and quiet (small town or rural would suit us just fine), but a short drive to a town where I can find work as a landscaper. This means, I suppose, being in proximity to a town whose people can afford to shell out for a gardener.
So far on the list to check out: Arden, Hendersonville, Boone, and Collowhee.

I left GR because I was ready for a major change in my life and I had been researching the WNC area for several years, and knew it was where I wanted to be for Phase 3 of Me! I love the small community of Blowing Rock and the charm and character. I rented a house within easy walking distance of the downtown historic area, which was exactly where I wanted to be. I found a church I love and have made a great friend very quickly whom I have a lot in common with. The only downside is I'm not finding many single men! I was hoping to find romance here, as I am ready for that in my life again. But, I've only been here a month so there is hope yet I will find that at some point.
I brought my job with me and work from a home office. I manage over 5000 cell phones and wireless devices for a large utility company on the east coast.
