Yeah you read title of this thread title right and it was news to me that this state had such a fine event.
Apparently for the last 19 years in the town of Brasstown a hamlet near Murphy the city would take a possum in a see thru box covered with tinsel and suspend it in the air and lower it to the ground at midnight on New Years.
Of course PETA sued N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission for issueing permit for the event.
A judge ruled in their favor stating “Citizens are prohibited from capturing and using wild animals for pets or amusement,”
I thought so too. I mean I could see if they if they hung the possum and let drop and splatter on the ground. This was first thing cam across my mind when I read Possum drop. (possums are road kill anyways. )
They are just lowering a possum in box what is the harm.
Whats next Ground Hogs, they to are wild animals treated as pet captured and use for amusement on Ground Hogs day.
Maybe they will win their appeal to continue this tradition.
This event has quite a following in Hayesville, which is just over the state line near where I live. Brasstown is an area in the county. It's not the city that does it. It's the owner of a small business.
The local newspaper in Hayesville has been covering this story all along. PETA did not prevail the first time and the last thing I read sounded like the event was going to happen as usual.
It's news to me that there was finally a ruling against it, but I haven't read the last few issues of the Hayesville newspaper. The locals will be disappointed. They feel the possum is treated like a king because they feed it during the days leading up to the drop, and they say it's just a slow drop of a short distance to the ground.
PETA says it must be terrifying for the possum because of all the people making noise. The locals think PETA is crazy.

I'm as big an animal lover as there ever was. Just rescued another furr-child as a matter of fact. But this... takes the cake. Why don't they actually do something helpful for animals instead of something so stupid... GGGGrrrrr. Maybe we should form a group called People for the protection from other people's stupidity!
I read a snippet that the misguided hand wringers at PETA are on attack mode to stop the Puxatawny Phil deal, in February...if PETA members only treated their fellow humans with as much concern.

We had been to the Possum Drop about 5 years ago. They had a huge gathering and everyone was having a great time. They have other events including music, a womanless beauty pageant, which was hilarious and fireworks at midnight. We left before midnight as it was already 32 degrees and we were freeeezing. Wusses I know! It's always held at Clay's Corner right near the John C. Campbell Folk School.
Who's to say the possum wasn't enjoying himself? The picture certainly doesn't show him freaked out and baring his teeth. I've seen that up close and personal and they are nasty.
I've lived in the area for 11 years and have never gone. I forgot about the "beauty" contest!
