Our GUT is saying "Go, go to NC" - the FL real estate market it is saying...
"STAY!!!!!!!"

Jan,
That's quite a story. Unfortunately there are some builders like that out there. We ran into one on the coast of NC during one of our moves. We will not be looking in a subdivision so I hope we do not run into him.

It certainly looks like it doesn't it! I was emailing with my good friend in Riverside, CA yesterday and she asked if it was beautiful here...got her giggling (online) about the "Target View"...LOL!

Hahaha - that's how I feel when I go to Wal-Mart in Asheville! Honestly, that is the most breathtaking setting over there, it's even on the river! Also, just the whole South Tunnel commercial corridor is so fun to drive on, because it goes UP and DOWN and all around in the distance are those distractingly gorgeous mountains! Makes me wish I were there right now! But we will be there in November for Thanksgiving! I never get tired of the view!
Now if only our house in Florida would sell......must have faith..... must have faith........

So sorry, SaveMtns!! And now the CA market is saying "Forget it--we have wildfires to deal with now." Schools are closed... folks can't go to work because the children are home... everyone is affected, some devastated... so the wheels of business creak as this one poor couple tries to negotiate the sale of their condo so they can make an offer on our house.
It's just our bad luck, right? Your bad luck, too, and gypsychic's, with the FL market the way it is. And we're sure not alone. We've all got lots of company in this bad luck market.
Wait. We all have a house to sell while hundreds of people are returning this week in anguish to find nothing of their house but charred remains.... Somehow I don't feel so unlucky any more....

We may not be buying into a development either now, Roger! Not just because of that one bad experience we had, but because of our ongoing change in perspective. We envisioned a house in a development--with a clubhouse, pool, and fitness center--to provide an "instant community" of folks like ourselves. Now we're wondering if such a community wouldn't be and feel artificial, set on an island apart from real communities. Again (as I said in my original post), the vision and the reality may be two vastly different things. Until we feel we can distinguish the one from the other--however long that takes--we won't be buying a house here at all!

gypsychic - We haven't meandered to Asheville yet...we're still exploring H-ville, maybe the next time the in-laws head over from the coast. We already have some friends in Ohio wanting to come for a visit in the spring to check out Chimney Rock and Lake Lure!
Parkies - My heart breaks for those that have lost their homes in CA... In the end, "This too shall pass" is a phrase that comes to mind, also keep reminding yourself that God has a plan for you. About 4 months ago, hubby had all but accepted a transfer offer to Monroe, NC but it fell through at the last minute...fast forward to today and now we are living in the paradise that is WNC!
As a side note to buying a home in a development, my in-laws also thought that they would love living in a development with the club house, tennis courts, boat slips, pool, etc...turns out, it was a nightmare because of the HOA...you had to get written permission to do practically ANYTHING to your house/lawn. And it DID have an "artificial" feel to it...full of a bunch of old fuddy-duddy's that had nothing better to do than complain about their neighbors. You seem like a free spirit, I don't envision you in a development. Still keeping my fingers crossed for the speedy sale of your SD home.

My heart also truly breaks for all those unfortunate people who have suffered losses in those devastating fires! Jan, I'm glad you posted again the other day, because I was so worried about your house! I take it, your house is safe, and not threatened. I totally agree, I don't feel unlucky at all, rather I feel very lucky, and feel that St. Joseph has always helped us in matters of the home.
a2zmom - I need to check out Hendersonville. We never really have much time on our short vacations to Asheville, and are always spending a lot of that time just tending to needs of the house (lawn, roof, leaves, etc) and by then we are too tired to go anywhere! lol - guess it kind of defeats the purpose. But we love being there, and always feel so relaxed and peaceful out on our deck on our small but semi-wooded neighborhood lot, overlooking a big hill and listening to the hundreds of happy little birds singing! And I just love the sweet herbal smell of the grass there - totally different from Fla!
Anyway, hubby and I would NEVER consider living in one of those PUD's - I hate the "gestapo" mentality (and fees!) of those HOA's - we are creative individuals and don't like anyone telling us what to do! I would have liked to find a little house in one of the neighborhoods of Merrimon on the north side (near UNCA), but nothing was available in our (very limited) price range. However, we were lucky to find our little diamond in the rough in Kenilworth Forest, right behind the Asheville mall. This cute little older neighborhood is tucked away from sight on a dead end road, with a lake in the middle of it. Very quiet and peaceful despite being walking distance to the mall, restaurants and the busy commercial road. All my neighbors here are very friendly and helpful, and they all look out for one another - it's a real community! We love it. I only wish we could be there more.
Well, here's to giving thanks for all that we have, and sending blessings to those who are going through hard times now. Everything goes in cycles, and one thing is certain, nothing stays up or down forever.
Talk to you later, friends!
