It could, and I would predict that it would probably bring a LOT of people from the Northeast. But here's the rub (and I can say this because I'm from the Northeast originally): they're gonna want to tell you how it's done. How what is done, you ask? Everything. Not all of them, by any means, but many will. Don't let 'em.

They will migrate toward the coast for the beaches and the large cities, not the mountains. They're not into farming, agriculture or the laid back lifestyle; and there isn't anythng for them to manage over here except being on the HOA boards of retirement communities. Texas maybe? More land, flat roads.

"there isn't anythng for them to manage over here"

lol, they'll find something, trust me. Here's a little story that illustrates the attitude: Many moons ago, when I was just out of college, there was this fellow who was part of a circle of young professionals that I sort of hung out with in the Northeast. During his college years, he decided to broaden his horizons and attend college in NC. Got accepted at Chapel Hill. Now, he thought, being from a good family in the Northeast and having all the proper credentials and the preppiest of clothing, he'd be a real hit at Chapel Hill. Thought he'd have all the Southern belles swooning at his feet and all the frats rushing him like crazy. He was gonna show them ALL how it was done.

Well!

He later said it was the worst year of his life (up to that point, anyway, I lost touch after I moved away so have no idea how the rest of his life worked out). Everyone was absolutely CHARMING and unfailingly polite to him, but he was frozen out (knowing the guy, small wonder). The women found him good enough for one date, sort of an exotic experience, and then dropped him like a hot potato. (His bitter excuse was that they found him not good enough for Daddy to meet, or compared him to their fathers and found him lacking.) The frats ignored him. No one cared for his fashion tips and no one was much interested in how they did it in the Northeast. He just couldn't understand it. Lonely and frustrated, he transferred back to college in Boston.

Now, I understand what college cliques can be like, but I couldn't help feeling that he just didn't apply the wisdom of "When in Rome" to his experience in North Carolina. And I think that Northeastern conceit got in his way. Bless his heart (lol).

It's interesting that, one the one hand, you appear to bemoan taxes and government but you want everyone to ditch their cars...how do suggest that people get around without cars, without taxes to pay for alternative mobility and without government to create and enforce regualtions to create a pattern of development conducive for multi-modal transportation?

I don't understand why this is thought of as such a great idea because the state will get the revenue some other way.

Our income taxes are not enough to worry about in North Carolina.

So far, they are talking about raising the sales tax a very small amount.

All I can say is one of the happiest days in my life was the day I sold my house in Fl and became a full time resident in the Blue Ridge Mountains!
