I have a potential job offer on the table that would require me to re-locate down to greater Asheville. The money is talking, and i want out of CT where I am now so i'm really considering it. I was originally trying to go to NH for freedom seeking, but NC doesn't seem half bad either with their politics (I'm VERY libertarian).
I hate cities. I don't mind working in one, and commuting about 45 min or so. But I want my home to be on some land and space away from my neighbors. It doesn't necessarily have to be in the boonnies, but at least out of the hustle bustle.
Any suggestions on areas to look for?
Ideally, i'd like around 10 acres of land, a moderate 1500 ish st ft home, and in the low 200k's range if possible.
How is Asheville as a whole? can i park downtown without my car getting broken in to?

Nice suburbs with a 30 mile radius of Asheville would be:
Black Mountain, Swannanoa, Weaverville, Fletcher, Arden, Hendersonville, Mills River, Brevard, Waynesville.
1500"ish" sq. ft. in the mid $200's would be very doable for something in very good condition and location. However, the 10 acres won't happen in that price range. Your car can get broken into anywhere in this country.
There are several threads ("search this forum" tab at top right) for info on the various towns mentioned above. Also do a search on any major Realtor franchise website by zip code to get a good idea of what type of properties suit your wants and needs.
Real estate inNC, (and on this thread) can also be searched by County. Waynesville is in Haywood County. Brevard is in Transylvania County. Hendersonville, Mills River and parts of Fletcher are in Henderson County etc. The others are in Buncombe County.
It is always suggested that anyone considering relocating to the area spend a week in exploring the various areas around Asheville to get a perspective and what type of feeling you get here. Here are a few websites that may help:

In addition to what QuilterChick wrote, also try Leicester, Candler, and Madison county.
That "...commuting about 45 min or so..." really opens up the circle of places to look at. It gives the OP several counties, lots of towns and areas.
QC's list and pointers, and NC-Paddler's are both right on.
That area though is Big, and surely offers the housing situ, and even some land if one can find it among the
noise and plethora of houses for sale, in that large of a geo circle.
It will take some time, both on the net and then feet on the ground, looking.

Freedom here is lost. They just passed gun reform than makes anyone with a magazine holding more than 10 rounds a FELON. it's ridiculous. The wake of sandy hook is a liberal night mare and i can't tolerate living here any more.
I LOVE snow. The 4 seasons. There's nothing like New England living. I will certainly miss it.
But the people...... these people are out of control and keep reacting emotionally instead of logically to everything.
between property, income, state income, sales, cap gains, highest gas taxes this side of the country and other taxes, i lose more than I care to add up. It's well over the average salary of this area according to wikipedia. lol
I'm in IT... I have an prospect with a salary range 15k more than I make now, and factor in the cost of living, it's a significant money to spend raise worth moving for.... on top of the fact that I want out.
It sounds like the area is pretty developed in all corners. Are there any small towns, 2500 people-ish any where near by? Some old farms, homesteads? etc.
I'm willing to go as high as 375k if i have to, but i'm really looking to stay in the mid 200's if i can so i can retire before i'm 97.
Frankly, the money wouldn't have to talk too loud to get someone to leave CT.... *especially* if it's someone who values freedom.
But if you want an ethical society that values human dignity and life, Connecticut might be just the place for ya.
Asheville is a great place for a whole host of reasons and I am proud to call it home but the state in which it resides lacks some fundamental "Family values".
