Looks like we just got a really well-respected and competent crime fighter for our area. He cut the crime rate almost in half in Greenville, SC in 4 years time. Let's hope he can do the same here.

Greenville, NC not SC, and by all accounts of residents here crime is NOT down. This man is just good at doctoring his statistics to show what he wants. Gangs are out of control and with that murders and robberies are following.

He was likely to lose his job under the newly elected council and got out while he could. How he landed a promotion no one understands.

One of the most beautiful cities in NC is about to become one of the worst to live in. Good luck.

Just the opinion of a lifelong Greenville resident, but that is my take on it. I do not feel safe in Greenville any more and many others feel the same way. 5 years ago things were not this way.

I love Asheville (what a beautiful place) and hope for its sake that these problems don't follow him.

Here is our newspaper's take on his leaving Greenville:
Editorial: Chief's departure offers challenge

And many comments from locals:

The Citizen-Times is the PR firm for city council.

Again the city looks outside to hire unknowns vs. promoting within.

I think the city needs to provide any new police chief free housing, in either Hillcrest or Pisgah View.

Yikes, those linked-stories and comments are pretty bad....

Why would the city council hire him then---did they just not do the research?
One of the worst detriments to business, tourism, and healthy economic growth will be increases in crime rates, and once the reputation of Asheville gets any worse than it already is, it will take decades to turn the bad reputation around.
I would think the city council would know this!

The city council doesn't care. In fact one member routinely comments on the ACT board and insults the locals (Cecil Brothwell). Because you know he totally knows what is best for everyone and anyone who disagrees with him is an idiot.
