All sorts of people are going to Raleigh on Mondays to protest for all sorts of reasons, good reasons. But I'm SO grateful there are some brave souls going to protest the big gov't takeover of Asheville's water supply. These individuals also put targets on their backs for investigations into their private lives by the "conservative" "think" tank Civitas, who's leader is also the governor's budget director of all things.

Tomorrow is an especially large group. I'm so sorry I can't join them, can't risk arrest...Heroes, everyone of them!!

There is no "risk of arrest" . It is simply a rally and those who wish to get arrested are instructed well beforehand on what to do. We cheer them on and follow them into the courthouse. The arrestees go to the rotunda and everyone else goes to the balcony's. It is only in the rotunda where you are asked to leave and when you do not they arrest you.

I have 3 seats to fill in the van for next Mon......come. We all come home without records

You really do have to try pretty hard to get arrested. It shouldn't be a concern.

I hope all of them are arrested and serve hard time. If they have jobs, and I suspect not, hope they lose them, as well. The idiots in the legislature are exceeded by the moral Monday crowd.

Gee, excuse me LLN but these are not largely out of work people but people who have arranged their work schedule in order to voice their opinions about what our state legislature is doing. The group of people that I rode with to the protests recently all have very well paying jobs. Demonstrations and protests are how our country traditionally changes the system. You and I cannot submit a bill or vote down a bill. We can voice our opinion very loudly and do our best to vote them out next time. It's called freedom of speech in a Democracy

The silence you seem to expect from the citizens of this country could be realized if you can convince all like minded people to hand their rights over to a Dictator. THAT silence I am sure would be more to your liking.

You should move to north korea. you will love it there.

I could not be happier to see more and more people stand up for their (our !!) rights and opinions. it took a while but now there is movement everywhere.
and we have reasons enough, since to many of the politicians, who were voted it, don't seem to work and speak for as, the people, at all.

Thank you tucler & young92!! (I just knew we had some heroes on this forum!)

Now that the GOPpers in Raleigh are redistricting Asheville's vote to include rural areas all the way to near Gastonia, our votes really aren't going to mean much, so protesting may be the ONLY way to have our voices heard. And if I don't have to worry about landing in a cell, then, I will have to figure out a way to take the day off work. Tricky with a large corporation, but stranger things have happened..

Anyone considering a move here should pay close attention to what is happening to our state right now.

I personally want to protest not only the water takeover, but also the deeply-concerning cuts to unemployment & medicaid. If republicans don't care about the harm this causes to our most needy, why are they ignoring the ramifications to themselves? That's not like them. Crime will rise. It's just common sense. Desperate people do desperate things.

And allowing legislators to accept gifts from lobbyists again. What is that? They're getting tired of having to hide it? Making people wait 2 years to divorce? Paving the way for toxic fracking, as well as offshore oil & gas exploration? Increasing tax burdens to the lower & middle classes while offering welfare to corporations & tax cuts for the wealthy? Banning parents from claiming their college children as dependents on their state taxes if those children vote on campus (as most students do)? There's more, but its just too depressing to go on.

Yep, protesting in Raleigh would be the thing to do. If nothing else, it raises awareness of these atrocities.

^^ This.

It's high time the good socialists and comrades of Asheville start to understand something: North Carolina went from blue to red.....and that means the state House, Senate, AND Governor......because the majority of people in this state are beginning to understand what liberalism is: The philosophy of entitlement, blaming others, and failure. It's WRONG to force those who work to give to those who don't and more importantly: WON'T. It's WRONG to give special privileges to one minority group at the expense of everyone else. It's WRONG to keep extending unemployment non-stop; because what incentive will you ever have to WORK if you get free handouts? It is WRONG to constantly say "We need another law/restriction/rule/TAX for the children, for the good of the collective society, yada, yada, yada......" Just precisely what is wrong with expecting people to pull their share by WORKING for their wages? Under Democratic rule, NC shot to one of the highest unemployment levels in the entire country. And NO, you can't say it was "those evil conservatives", because it was YOUR party in power at the time.

Look, Comrades: Please understand, the shoe is on the other foot now. The people of NC spoke loud and clear in the last election. Although it was close, it was still decisive. You lost. Period. So I suggest you get over it until 2014 when you'll get another shot. Cuba, Russia, Venezuela, North Korea, France, Spain, and Greece have all proven the same thing: Socialism and it's close cousin Communism doesn't work.
