It's 193 miles between Charlotte and Ghent, WV. Way too fast for public highways. You do the math.

Thanks for all of your help. I especially appreciate the links. I guess I was mistaken when I thought that there would be some type of skiing in the mountains near Maggie Valley? Should I assume that these really aren't "mountains"? Of course I realize we're not takling about the Rockies here, but they are referred to as "the mountains" in Asheville. (???)

They are definitely mountains, but mountains without any ski resorts on them. For one thing, it doesn't snow there often enough.

Yes, we have many mile-high mountains in Western North Carolina, but the climate this far south doesn't make for good Rocky Mountain type snow. The snow season is way too short in the Southeastern U.S.
Mount Mitchell in Yancey County is the highest mountain in the Eastern United States at 6,684 feet above sea level. The highest mountain in Haywood County, where Maggie Valley is located, is 6,621 feet above sea level. The Appalachian Mountains are around 700 million years old and worn down by time. The Rocky Mountains are the relatively new to the scene and much higher. Colorado has many peaks in the 14,000 foot range.
NC Ski Resorts
Appalachian Ski Mtn - Blowing Rock, NC
Cataloochee - Maggie Valley, NC
Hawksnest - Seven Devils, NC
Sapphire Valley - Sapphire, NC
Scaly Mountain - Scaly Mountain, NC
Ski Beech - Beech Mountain, NC
Sugar Mountain - Sugar mountain, NC
Wolf Laurel - Mars Hill, NC

Wow! Thanks. Maybe we should concentrate on hiking and camping instead of skiing?

WV Winterplace is easily four + hours. It is though a good weekend to get away and go skiing. If you want to drive for a little longer snowshoe is the next step.
I enjoy winterplace and enjoy the time away we always have fun. The North Carolina mnts are terrible for Skiing unless we have a good winter. If they have to continue to make snow in 60 degree weather its nothing but gravel
