Hey folks, the family and I are taking advantage of a day off from work and school to take a day trip up to Asheville. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about "must see" spots in the Asheville area. We aren't looking to take any tours or anything, rather get a feel for our neighbor to the north.
Dear A2ZMom,
Here's a little circuit you can take, easy to get around, will give you a feel for the area.
Biltmore Village
When you are on I-40 coming into Asheville, take the Biltmore Estate exit (about exit 50), go North, and Biltmore Village is a few blocks down on the right. Turn in there somewhere and park on one of the streets, really quaint group of English type house-shops and eateries. In one of the stores, ask which one is the Nature Store, small but fun for kids and adults. Cost: Free.
Blue Ridge Parkway
After that, get back on the main drag, heading towards I-40, but go under the freeway and keep going South several miles. When you see the overpass and the sign on the right that says Blue Ridge Parkway, get off there, and just turn left onto it, heading East, and enjoy the ride, lots of views, easy 45mph two-lane road. Cost: Free
Parkway Visitor's Center
Shortly after you get on the Parkway, there is a Visitor's Center, you can't miss it, note the mile marker, and come back there after you're tired of riding. Big building, nice display of local crafts, souvenirs and such. They can also tell you what else to visit in our area that suits your needs and how to get there. Cost: Free
Hope this helps. If I had kids and only had a day, that's what I'd do.
.......
Also, when you get off the highway you can stop at the Asheville Chamber of Commerse. That's what we did and it was very nice. I was impressed! You can pick up all kinds of literature on the area and get helpful tips.
I'd walk all over downtown Asheville. There are self-guided walks available at the information centers, but just walking the town is a "trip" in itself!!
And please don't give money to the panhandlers, it only empowers them to become more brazen in their demands for money to support their substance abuse.
Thank you everyone! Jan, how very kind of you! One of these days we will take you up on your offer!
Asheville Native - There is no chance of that happening...I understand that everyone falls on hard times, but there are social programs for that, and panhandling is not one of them.
we really have some closed minded cynics here in this forum
