I live outside of Asheville and will say that this area is very expensive. Flat land is very hard to find if you want affordable.
Do you prefer humidity? That is something to consider. It is humid here, year-round. Well, except for when all those forest fires took hold last year, but that was really odd. And scary. Fires were less than a mile from our house.
Do you like mountains? I thought mountains were great before I moved here, then they became oppressive and make me claustrophobic. I miss the wide openness of the midwest.
Also, wages are quite low here. Living expenses are high. My husband makes upwards of $100,000 a year and we can't afford health care coverage for our family. I don't know if that's different in other states at this point in time.
Is it worth it to me? No. I would move in a heartbeat. I hate the humidity and heat. Here in WNC, it gets quite hot. But then again, I would move back to Michigan in a heartbeat (I really dont' like it here at all), or maybe Alaska. Most would call me crazy, but that's just my two cents.
There's really no need to dig up 10 year old threads and post the same thing over and over.
