Default Thoughts of a wannabe transplant

As I sit here in the 80 degree heat, with the windows open and the ceiling fan gently whirring overhead, the thought came to mind: "I probably have seen the last 100 degree day I'll ever live through!"

Well, maybe. It doesn't reach 100 in Brevard, if I understand correctly, and even if it was going to approach that one day, we would head to the Highlands to swim or picnic.

We set a record here in AZ this year for the most days over 110 (one hundred and TEN) in recorded history. No, it isn't "global warming," but it is hot not matter the reason.

As I read Jan's notes about how much she loves the trees and the squirrels and the raccoons, I hold back the jealousy. I know I will be there eventually. Yes, patience is a virtue, it just isn't one of MINE. (ha!)

Next week is Thanksgiving. I am thankful for family and health, and retirement, and all sorts of things. But I do not want to forget to thank everyone here for the kindness, generosity, advice, experience, questions, links, and just plain friendliness. You are like a small town community to me. Thank you.

Loves mountains is on a distinguished road
Father John - The hardest part is remaining "present" for our daughter's senior year of high school - not made any easier by the fact that she is so ready to be in college! She turned 18 yesterday. We visited our homesite last weekend and our wonderful neighbor took us up to the top of the mountain we share and showed us amazing paths he has created (and wants us to use with our dogs). We can see Asheville from the backside of the mountain - it adds another dimension to the already overwhelming feeling we get when we are on that land. I can't believe that someday (Fall 2009) we will walk those paths everyday. Meanwhile I am trying to enjoy where I am and not drive myself crazy thinking about what will be. Boy, do I know how you feel...

Default Thanks-giving!!

Ahhh, guys, I'm not trying to make you jealous--I'm trying to inspire you to know and remember what's in store for you here no matter how tough this day, this week, or this year, and no matter how long it takes you to get here. We've been planning, researching, and dreaming of this move to WNC for sixteen years(!), and until October 7, this was the worst year of our lives!! Now that we're here... well... I can tell you it was totally worth the wait!!!!!!

I'll post our thanks-giving on our "Diary of a Transplant."

Thank you, Father John, for reminding us of our many reasons to give thanks! You and Laura are certainly among them!!!!

Jan

Father John - 6 weeks ago, we were planning our move to WNC scared out of our gourds to move to a place where we'd never been, but I can honestly tell you it was so worth it! You will be here soon and all it will take is one lovely autumn day and you will truly believe in your heart of hearts that you are living in "God's Country"...for anyone who may not believe that God exists, all it takes is looking at these meager pics from our trip to Mt. Mitchell on Monday to know the He exists...

Yea! Looks like it worked

I took that picture last October in Jefferson - if you haven't been to this lovely area, where this is Christmas tree farm after Christmas tree farm, put it on your "must visit" list!

We'll definitely put it on our list, lovesmtns!

We were pleasantly surprised at the amount of color left on the BRP! Of course at the top of Mt. Mitchell, the leaves were almost gone, but it was a nice ride to and from!
