See copied reply from the Answer Woman in today's AC-T asking about bear attacks in Asheville. No known bear attacks in NC in recent memory. Leave city bears alone and they will leave people alone.

Real answer: The state’s Wildlife Resources Commission does keep this data, though it has been an easy number to keep track of in recent years: zero.
“We haven’t had any bear attacks or deaths in recent memory in North Carolina,” said biologist Justin McVey, who oversees WNC for the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.
“We want to stress that bears don’t come up to you and attack your children or come running after you to attack you.”
McVey said there was one case recently in which a woman was swatted after trying to retrieve a small dog that was agitating a bear in her neighborhood. He said the woman admitted it wasn’t the bear’s fault.
“That we would not classify as an attack,” McVey said. “That’s more just a bear doing bear things, and a human getting in the middle of it.
“If you make them feel in danger, or confront them, that’s a good possibility, that they will take a swipe at you,” he said. “But they aren’t seeking you out. If you keep your garbage out of the way and don’t feed them, or think they’re really friendly, there’s really nothing to worry about.”

Thank you!! I'm glad you're here now. Let's lose the paranoia & get some rational thinking, some facts in this discussion. Draw logical conclusions from that. No need to get all trigger-happy out there!!

We should be more concerned & paranoid about getting killed or maimed by a drunk driver.

It seemed like a question that the AC-T would be interested in pursuing. There are far too many professing "keep your gun by your side when bears are around" in order to justify their new concealed weapon permit and shooting iron. If bear behavior was better understood, there would be one more bear still alive here. Actually, considering how much crap bears have to tolerate and how confused they are, it's a wonder that hundreds of people testing their limits haven't been shredded. My last comment on this topic.

And a 9 mm isn't going to do anything except anger a full sized one. You don't want that.

Here's a bear story with a happier ending, at least for the bear. Donna has 4 Cubs!

Awwww, that was adorable! That is a happy ending. I loved the photo of the mom looking up at the cubs in the tree, keeping an eye on them. Thanks for the smile Imherenow!

Loved it, thanks for sharing. Our new neighbors had a thrill watching a bear on the mountainside above them digging for food of some sort. They will adapt to life in the mountains as they share our philosophy of coexist with the wild ones who also call this home. Do nothing to attract them, be cautious in the woods, respect their right to be here.

General rule to remember....no food no bears.
But Candada has Polar Bears, Grizzly Bears, Brown Bears, and Black Bears. NC only has Black Bears. Polar bears actually see man as food.

My mother lives in Longwood, Florida and black bears frequently hang out in the neighborhood, coming up from the Wekiva Basin.

A woman in a gated community there was attacked by a BB one night while walking her dogs. Perhaps someone has posted this already.

I haven't got an update on it. I believe the bear tore her scalp up.

I'm not sure (odd as it sounds) if they have ruled it as an actual attack. Okay, more specifically, an unprovoked attack. They suspect the dog provoked the bear.

The first unprovoked attack was recorded last year, for Florida.

The dog's okay; the woman will survive. They still haven't caught the bear.
