Though snow has been a rare event the last 3 or 4 years, on the occasions there has been snow, my way home has been blocked by the completely clueless about driving on snow. The worst wrecks are typically 4x4 drivers that believe they are invincible with their extra traction.
My brother, who speaks from experience, says that 4wd is mainly good for getting stuck in worse places than you can with 2wd..

As a long time 4x4 owner I can confirm that. buried mine once or twice, but have also pulled a number of other 4x4 owners out of the mud or sand, many miles from the hardtop.

All wheel drive works well in this area especially when road conditions deteriorate or you have to traverse hilly unimproved roads / driveways. They have a lower center of gravity when compared to other 4x4s.

AWD gives you peace of mind without overconfidence when driving in snow that usually gets the traditional 4x4s (SUVs, PU trucks, etc) in trouble.

Still, it's best just to stay off the roads and let the highway department do their job.

4x4s don't ditch on their own...inexperienced and overconfident drivers do!

If you're up here for New Year's it looks like you might get some snow after all! We've got a winter storm advisory here in haywood county, and asheville is calling for at least a little snow.

Are there any other webcams besides High Country Web Cams? So we can watch to see if it snows!

I wouldn't put much faith in forecasts that far in advance as the mountains often make the weather forecasters look like fools. They often miss their 24 hour forecasts and it really goes down hill at 48+ hours.

Yep, this is only a watch, not a warning.

Now, the National Weather Service has changed the watch to a warning. They have also added more counties.
