I'm just curious to hear about the future of Asheville. Industry-wise, culture, population, people, etc... You name it!

What will the Asheville look like in 2050?

If NC is lucky, Asheville will become the Eastern most Western city in the USA and look and act a lot like Seattle and Portland and have been a magnet for young people all over the USA.

Lol, I was gonna say "Seattle".... more ppl, a little more weird, industry wise- unchanged. Younger and younger crowd, but poor pay scale and high cost of living will more than likely continue to attract waiters/waitresses and customer service oriented people.

Consider that the Baby Boom generation of retirees will have died out. Those people are described by the media as possibility the last generation that will actually be able to retire and relocate to Asheville, where they can afford a higher cost of living and partake of the various services that employ the young, restless and willing to live here regardless of the wages. If retirees and tourists are the major economic engines, who will replace this revenue stream in 2050? Will there be enough tourist types in 2050 who can afford to come here for whatever natural resources are left to enjoy? Will those being born now, who will be 36 in 2050, prefer (or have no option) to stay home and plug themselves into the electron plasma cloud for their daily dose of news, social connections, spirituality and nirvana? Tourists and retirees may be a forgotten cultural artifact.

Few of us reading this will be on the planet then, and those that are younger won't care much, by 2050...

Agree on us Boomers are gonzo, and suspect much of the western NC will be a lot more crowded. Chaotic weather increases, and there will be another 2 to 2 1/2 Billion people on this planet, by then.

Not necessarily 'here', but the impact just feeding that add'l number and the resources to supply them will strain and push whatever tech anyone can come up with, in the next 3+ decades...

Because typically younger crowds will be more willing to wait tables, etc. to live where they wanna live. They will share rooms and live in apartments like many do now. And yes, industry unchanged, for most part. I dont see how that is going to change.

In 2050, when I will be one hundred and one, the congressional hearings on Benghazi might be wrapping up, the I-26 connector will have another study, Beer will be cheaper than water, The Saluda grade will be an ocean front water park, The exact location of the vortex will be found and it will instantaneously transport you to the nearest Starbucks, The crosswalk signals will increase to a count of eleven for the remaining Baby boomers.....and I will get my first Tattoo....A Shar pei.
For those my age everything will be swing'n man.
