My husband recently accepted a job offer at App State and we are beginning our search for housing in Boone. We will be relocating from Louisville, KY though I previously lived in Asheville and am familiar with WNC. Our housing wishlist includes: 2-3 bedrooms, 1 1/2-2 baths, washer/dryer, dishwasher, porch or deck (or some outdoor area) and to actually be IN Boone. We are young, responsible professionals used to living in a house and would like to live in a quiet residential area (not surrounded by partying college students). We would like to keep our budget under $900/month. If anyone has any leads or suggestions on where to look, realtor companies to use (or avoid), or any other pointers, I would greatly appreciate it!

You can search by zip code and then narrow down your search parameters in the Advanced Search bar after you enter the town or zip code. The site will show which Realtors' office has each listing, and the agent to contact within that office.
or: (Are you renting at $900/month ? or looking to purchase a home? )
It is against C-D rules to post office or agents' names here. You may get recommendations via direct messages from some of our posters. If you are renting you should get a property management company or look at www.citizen-times.com which is the Asheville newspaper. I don't have the address of the local paper in Boone, however.
The best place to find rentals in boone is either on Craigslist or through one of the papers - Boone, NC News - Mountain Times or www.wataugademocrat.com The Mountain Times definitely is the better of the two. There are a few rental companies in town, but personally, I try and stay away from them as they are geared more toward students. Craigslist has a section just for Boone. Be prepared though, rent is very expensive here.
Thank you for the responses. I should have specified that we are looking to rent a home, not buy. From what I have researched, the cost of living seems comparable to here in Louisville. So far I have primarily been looking on Craigslist, but most of those listings seem to be geared toward students. My husband and I are in our early 30s and wanting something nicer than student housing but still affordable.
I will have to check out the Mountain Times. Would anyone have any recommendations on what neighborhoods to look in considering the criteria I've listed? We would like to be in a residential area not too far from campus.
I've lived in the area for a long time. If you see something that looks interesting, send me a direct message and I'll be happy to give you my impressions. I always have opinions.
From what I can tell housing in Boone can be a real mixed bag. Don't discount all homes that look like they might be student rentals. My MIL has a vacation home in Boone in a little neighborhood on a creek. Most of the residents are year-round, but a few like her have second homes. Some of the homes are rented by ASU students, too. One house across the creek from her had been full of students, but the dad of the kids who were living there sold it after his kid graduated so now a vacationer has bought it.
Good luck. I work at ASU and live 30 minutes from Boone b/c it is more affordable even after factoring in fuel costs. $900/month isn't going to go far downtown, and that's mostly student housing anyways. I would recommend craigslist for a by owner rental. The rental agencies here cater to students and are very unaffordable. Hope you enjoy Boone. I am trying to get outta here.
