Is Asheville/Boone/Hickory area anything like Northern California?

I am looking to relocate to the Asheville area.

I'm looking for peace and quiet but also enjoy walking to downtown for a night life as well.

I have my own business making custom leather handbags so I will pursue opportunities.

My vehicle is not the greatest in snow so I was looking in a downtown apartment. But reviewing the post's maybe I shouldn't be downtown. ??

The condo's and apartment's ask for so much more $$$ , more than other places I've lived in.

Can an Asheville native please advise?

The weather changes can be drastic in this area. For example, where I'm at has received very little snow, maybe a few days of flurries. However, in Banner Elk last night there was at least 6 inches in some places on the ground. That's only about 30 minutes from me.
