Default Log Home Communities? Rutherford-Henderson Counties?

Hello! I'm new to this forum and glad I found you guys. I need some help here.

I spent a year in Hendersonville a few years ago and fell in love w/ the area. As a BabyBoomer slipping and sliding into retirement age, I am scouting the area to settle down. I'm hoping to get some general impressions from the members of this forum.

My ideal place would be quiet, heavily wooded and private but with like-minded folks in the general area, about 1-2 acres w/ a log home (or rustic log-like) about 1000 +/- sq ft, or a site that I can build one upon. It will also need to be secure. My budget is 200K (+/-) and would be my primary residence so it would need to be winterized and accessable in the winter. As far as amenties, I don't need much...as long as I can walk in the woods, read a book, paint or curl up w/ my cat in front of a fire, I'm pretty happy.

I lived in a lovely community in Hendersonville and liked it a lot, but I'm not interested in planned activities (*no* I don't want to play bridge, have cocktails at the pool, join a walking club or crochet-a-toilet-paper-cover, thank you very much... and please stop knocking on my door, damnit!).. Alright....I'm a curmudgeon.

Anyway, does anyone know of a place similar to my ideal? Any information about the Hearthstone Ridge and Clearwater Creek communities in Rutherford County? Impressions? Any new affordable communities in the planning?

I may be able to swing the purchase of a property now and build when my place sells in New England. Unfortunately, the housing market is just as bad up here. With WNC being "discovered" however, I don't want to wait for the prices to go beyond my budget.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me...

Default Your questions

Hi there,
I think there are many places in western and northern Rutherford county that would fit your requirements. It would be a matter of getting here to look. As to Clearwater Creek and Hearthstone, they are nice gated developments, from smallish lots .5 acre or so to bigger ones 2 to 4 acres. There is a good bit of building going on in CC, almost all log homes. I haven't been in Hearthstone in a long time. It is much closer to Forest City than CC. CC is near Rutherfordton. To the north are many developments, and mountains. These are farther out from town. Yellowtop Mountain, Golden Valley Estates, The Ridge at Southmountain, and several more. The main thing is do you like the look of these developments, or would you be happier on 2 or 3 acres out in the country. You can see some of this online, just google. The land in the developments will probably cost more than a country lot. If I can help in any way, just let me know.
MM

Default $200K for a log home...I doubt it???

Log Homes are expensive to build, and ""VERY"" expensive to maintain

"""I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU DO YOUR HOMEWORK, BEFORE COMMITTING"""

I owned one, for about 5 years....sold it... wheewwwww!!!

YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOUR GETTING INTO, AND ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES....

I purchased a home in a gated community east of Asheville, south of Marion off 226. This is a second home with the hopes of selling our home in Florida (tough market) and moving to NC. We purchased a home in a log home gated community. It was a lot more expensive then we thought. But boy is it beautiful! Getting under 200K is going to be hard. You can get a home with wood siding that looks like logs. You will save some money that way. Good luck! Wendy

I realize this is an old thread but thought Iwould reply anyway. My wife and I purchased a lot between Sylva and Cashiers (hwy 107)a little over a year ago.Originally thought we wanted a log cabin.Ater pricing packages and doing a little research(I am a builder)decided against because of initial expense and maintenance. We built what might be called a hybrid timber frame(2x6 walls and beam ceilings)We are now in the final stages and I would have to say it has turned out quite well. Our particular subd.is 65 lots with 16 homes it was developed in the 80's and the lot prices are still reasonable(several are not buildable-to steep)Make sure you have access to water and a septic permit before buying anything!
