Mostly ice out of Weaverville, no salt or sand trucks yet and zero cars. Our driveway is steep so staying put with the stove cranking. I was hoping for some snow it always transforms the mountains into a winter wonderland. Be very careful if you have to head out.
We had 6-8" of snow at our house at the foot of Grandfather Mtn. Even though it's cold, the sun is melting snow where it's been plowed or shoveled. Main roads are wet but clear. I dread the super cold lows Wed and Thurs night... and the next electric bill. Even though I love ski season, I'm ready for spring.
I am staying in Lake Lure and the road to the cabin is very, very steep. They don't sand or salt the roads in this community, so I think I'm stuck inside for a while since the temperature will be dropping into the single digits by Wed evening and as low as zero by late Thurs. (I'm from SW Florida) I guess I won't drop dead if I live on eggs, spaghetti, instant oatmeal and soup. Good thing Harvard just released the results of a study proving eggs won't raise the cholesterol levels in your blood. LOL Gee, maybe next they'll have a new study recommending lots of sugar and saturated fat to slow down the aging process.
We didn't lose power here, which is big plus. The temperature is a few degrees warmer than in Asheville, so much of the ice melted today, but I walked to the corner and the road (which is shaded) down to route 64 looks like a ski slope. I wish I had left my car near the entrance, but I wasn't sure if I could walk back up to the cabin.
By the way, it's really beautiful being in the mountains. This morning when I opened up the front door, it was like looking at a Christmas card.
I slid a good 10-15 feet on our driveway and only stopped because I intentionally sat down. Holy cow it's solid ice. I have a dog with a bum hip so I had to make sure to remove most of the ice from the front deck. What a workout. Then I stupidly thought to remove the ice on our driveway. I only made a tiny bit of progress before giving up. Hopefully what little I exposed will warm up and help the rest along. We are going to be stuck for a while.
On another note, if you build a house here don't make a sloped shaded driveway concrete. Ugh. Not worth replacing though. Hmp. Guess we will need to figure out some kind of eco friendly salt solution to have around.
