Default mid-march trip to asheville and smokey mtns?

I am thinking about going to the asheville area for some photography of spring plants etc... I want to go to asheville and the great smokey mountains. Is mid-march too early to see blooming flowers, wildlife, and other things of the sort?

Dear Sam,
Better to come mid-April. The mountains bloom later than the rest of the South becaue of the higher altitude. Won't even be green grass mid-March. The blizzard of '93 was mid-March, the whole town of Asheville shut down.

Default mid-march trip

As stated in the other reply, you could possibly be taking winter wonderland photos in mid-March. It is hard to say anymore what the weather should be like, but typically March in WNC mountains is harsh. Mid to late April should be fine dependant upon exactly where you plan to take photos. If you are going to be 2000'-2500' elevations mid April should be fine. If you are going to be at 3500'+ you should wait until late April.
