Cool Small town charm near Asheville

Hi everyone! I'm looking into moving near Asheville, NC. I don't want to live in the city. I would like to find a town within 10-20 minutes from Asheville. I'd like it to have a coy small town feel without too many big chain stores (I generally like towns with more family-owned businesses). Does anyone have any suggestions?

I agree with native, Black Mountain. It will blow you away, so very special. The cute downtown and Lake Tomahawk, you've got to visit. Maybe 20 mins freeway drive.

Black Mountain for myriad of reasons. If you are willing to accept a smaller home and/or a fixer upper, then all price ranges are available.

As RE prices in the area are now 'readjusting', keep an eye on the local RE market over the next year or so and you should find a home which is fairly priced.

Black Mountain is one of the cutest towns I've been in. It has such a wonderful 'charm' to it. If I could choose where I could live right now, it would be Black Mountain, hands down.

Marshall is another one, though it's a bit further away than you said you'd like. Canton is another possibility but then there's the paper mill...
