Long before the general public has even the faintest clue, corporations that control supermarket chains, restaurant and hotel chains, home improvement chains, etc. do major planning and projections. Often they act on inside information and data from other corporations regarding changes in headquarters, manufacturing operations, communications and tech, finance, health care, various shifts in business trends, etc. It's very sophisticated stuff and I don't pretend to know all the ins and outs of it, but when you begin to hear about the plans of various large service and consumer oriented businesses targeting an area, just take notice and keep your ear to the ground. Plans are made, property is targeted, that sort of thing. Years ahead of time.

Mind you, not all those plans come to fruition. For example, when I was working for a home improvement vendor, it was rumored that a home improvement chain had plans on the books for two stores in a certain area. Over time, they moved forward with one, and I heard the other was scrapped, based on development patterns.

Anyway, I realize this is way off topic for this thread, and I apologize to the OP, but I just think there are good things ahead for the area.

Publix looks to open store in Hickory - News - Hickory Daily Record

I got a publix flyer in the mail the other day. I think they're priming the market. The Lowes Foods on 127 has really spiffed itself up in preparation. I hope this doesn't affect the sustainability of the recently opened Food Matters Market, but I'm pretty happy about Public coming to town.

They'll have to compete with Lowes' beer selection if they want my $. I usually to go Food Lion for price, but Lowes for selection. Even their frozen pizza section must have at least 20 different brands.

I am very excited to know that the OP is ecstatic about moving to Hickory! I'm a cord cutter for about a year now but still have internet with Century Link. Before that, I had direct tv. I've also had Charter for tel, cable and internet in the past.
So far, Century Link has provided reliable internet service and it's fast enough for me. I stream stuff through Roku so the content suits my needs. I watch local channels through antenna. On another note, I was told by someone in the know, that Hickory is planning a dog park. This is a huge deal for all of us dog owners. There is a lot planned for downtown and there has been talk that dog owners have not been the tidiest there so a dog park would be a much needed alternative for getting fido out and about.

I've been reading about Charter and it's concerning me... Really bad BBB reviews. Albeit most of them are out-of-state (NC) but nonetheless disheartening. We attempted a cord cut and we stream a lot through Netfkix, Hulu, and Amazon as well; however, Dish Network pretty much gave away a package in order to not lose us so I figured wth! Honestly, I'm not certain there's even another option in the Hickory (Catawba springs area... We are renting for approx 8 mos in Carolina Springs sub) for Internet or TV?

Oh, and coming from a suburb of Chicago... We did go to Highland Ave and it was phenomenal!!! So, no surprise that it's #28! The staff is impeccably trained; honestly with all these restaurants (high end) I've been to in Chicago I've never come across someone trained so well. She knew everything about it all, how it tasted, what it was (by look), it was incredible!!

I've been on Charter for 25+ years - Boone (9 yrs), Banner Elk (16 yrs), and Greenville SC (4.5 yrs) - and never had any significant issues. I've always had prompt and responsive customer service.
