Fairly certain too, btw, that those are long leaf pines in Pinehurst/So. Pines area but maybe you just don't like pines period !

I have a suggestion even though its not as low in elevation that you want. Linville Land Harbor is very social and a very easy place to make friends...its very beautiful too!

Well, there's hot and then there's !!HOT!!. We live in central Florida, but leave the state for 4-5 months in the hot part of the year. Last year, we summered in Flat Rock and will be doing that again this summer. Two years ago we summered outside Waynesville.

I think foothill NC summers are delightful. Hot enough to swim and tube down the chilly rivers, but not the suffocating heat of Florida summers. The nights are perfect. I got a big kick out of everyone complaining last summer about the heat......if they spent a week in Orlando in July, they'd hightail it back to the foothills as fast as they could run.

I love Flat Rock and the Hendersonville area. Lots to do. Everything you could possibly need are within reasonable distance and if Hendersonville doesn't have it, Asheville will.

Gotta put Franklin into the mix, just won the Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine contest as the best small town in the Appalachians. Summer temps are mild, easy access to major metro areas but far enough away to avoid any metro feeling, plenty of homes available with property in the OPs price range. Yes, Franklin definitely has retirees, and heat isn't really an issue. Might be a good fit.
