  • Meats (separated by poultry, beef, pork, seafood)
  • Delicate items including breads and eggs
  • Nonperishable foods (canned foods, boxed foods, etc.)
  • Dry items, soda cases and beer cases with handles are not bagged
I usually maximize each bag where it has enough items and not packaged with anything harmful. I enjoy the use of reusable shopping bags.
And the best way people can help this (and not saying you don't) is to place your items on the belt in those groups, with the heavy stuff first and fragile and delicate items last so that they don't get squashed by the other items as they pile up at the bagging station. Plus they get put in the cart last and on top of everything else.

The problem with that, related directly to this thread, is when you go through a regular line at Ingles & the cashier empties the cart while scanning the items. If she pulls out hamburger buns followed by 2 cans of Chunky soup you are likely to get the soup on top of the hamburger buns.

Hmmmm.... which Ingles would that be ? Never been to one here in all my years in Hendersonville (and the general area) where a cashier empties my cart. Nor any other market, e.g. Bi-Lo, Fresh Market, Harris Teeter and so forth. I do admit, however, that Ingles in general has the worst-trained baggers on the earth. They either put all the heavy stuff in one bag (like 2 half gallons of milk or all the canned goods), or they waste/use several bags with very little in each. Can't wait for Publix to get here !

Kings Mountain & Dallas. There is no initial belt. You have to give the cart to the cashier who rings it up as she removes the items from the cart. I never said that the OP was wrong about cashiers emptying carts. She's wrong that it's customer service. It's loss control.

I like the way Food Lion operates now, the cashier has 4 open bags at any time, and can place like items in whatever bag. Bread never gets mashed, and cold items stay together.

I was the Ingels in Waynesville last week, the cashier took the items out of my basket.

At the Ingles on Highland Lake rd the cashier empties the cart. I won't use plastic bags and asking for paper throws them for a loop whether I'm at Ingles, Teeter or Fresh Market - they are clueless how to properly pack a grocery bag so I generally bag my own or at least get the things that will bruise or squash away from cans or other heavy items. At the cost of food, this should not be an issue and it's astonishing to me that there isn't better training. It can be done - Trader Joe's is a prime example.
