So this may seem like a dumb question (and potentially blasphemy) as Asheville is known for its craft beer industry buttt....I am not much of a craft beer fan. I mean ive tried several and I don't hate it but its just not what I am into.
So, that being said, my question is are all the bars downtown pretty much craft beer joints? I go up there for work a lot and this week I am actually going to hang out after work for happy hour and beyond that so I just wanted to kind of see what you all would recommend on that front. I see the Wild Wing downtown and I like the one in downtown Columbia, not sure how the one here is?
The places listed by Lucky Dawg sound much more interesting. I'd much rather go to unique bars that reflect more of the local character of the place I'm visiting instead of a chain restaurant bar that's going to look like the one I go to at home.
Not being a huge beer fan myself, I can sympathize. I really only enjoy Belgians (Chimay, St. Bernardus, Ommegong, Golden Draak etc). I hate IPA's, and this is ground zero for the craft IPA resurgence.
I'm more into Bourbon, Rye, Whiskey and rum. I also like unique craft cocktails. Fortunately for us outcasts, Asheville is also home to some really awesome liquor bars. Mg road and The Nightbell both have out of this world unique cocktails. I guarantee you won't find anything quite like the craft cocktails there. Cucina also has some unique ones.
The Crow and Quill is a super eclectic poe influenced bar that has some of the best selection of hard to find Bourbons and Ryes I've ever seen. They also do all other liquors and I recommend you give it a try for the one of a kind experience.
Cheers!

I have similar tastes to evensen and think almost ALL American craft is crap. How can you call your beer a lager, stout, porter or pilsner when it tastes like every American IPA ever? That said, Wicked Weed's Funkatorium and Thirsty monk are doing a great job of making beers with more of a flavor than just hops.
I dont always drink beer out in Asheville, but when I do I prefer Funkatorium and Thirstymonk's downstairs.
