We are looking to retire to the Mountain area of NC. Just starting to look. Looking for small quaint town with great restaurants, alot of activities, friendly community etc., but not so remote you have to drive an hour to get a gallon of milk. Reasonable housing prices, good health care facilities.

Hendersonville - Flat Rock area is the area you want to focus on. 25 miles South of Asheville (most of the Asheville shopping is on the South side or between Hendersonville and Asheville on highway 25) and 35 miles North of Greenville, SC. Many restaurants, more grocery stores per capita than any city in my experience. The Winter weather is better South of 40 than North, and property taxes are less expensive in Henderson county vs. Buncombe county.

Also fits your description: Waynesville, Black Mountain, Weaverville, Saluda, Tryon, Lake Lure

(Reasonable housing prices, however, are budget priorities.) Where are you relocating from?

All of this is my opinion.

Waynesville is 20+ miles west of Asheville and there are no other towns close by. Same with Black Mountain except it is 20 miles East of Asheville. Weaverville is 9 miles North of Asheville and the downtown is far smaller than Black Mountain, Waynesville, or Hendersonville. More empty store fronts in BM and Waynesville than Hendersonville.

Tryon is in the thermal belt (look it up) and is the new destination for equestrians. Landrum, SC is right next door (also in thermal belt) and prices in SC are cheaper than Buncombe or Henderson county. SC has cheap gas, cheap electricity and cheap property taxes. Greenville is 25 miles from Landrum, 30 from Tyron. Both have downtowns, with Landrum being the larger. Both are abut an hour from Asheville and 30 minutes from Hendersonville. Both have easy access to I-26.

Use the Search This Forum Tab, middle upper right side of page: plug in place names one at a time, eg town names previous good posters have noted, and do some reading...

Your questions come up here on the Jukebox about once a week and there are Pages of Threads on most of the towns/areas in western NC already discussed in depth.

Do some reading, and come back and ask some more questions.

Western NC is a wonderful area to live in, imo.
