Obviously the area is VERY hilly...but for casual bikers who are happy with a 2-mile bike path or back road ride, are there any places that aren't all that hilly or demanding for biking?

Check out Moses Cone Memorial Park. I recall that it has a pretty flat walking trail.

No bicycles are allowed on the trails at Cone Park... pedestrians and horses only!

There a road that runs along the New River through Todd that's popular with casual bicyclists... I believe it is called Railroad Grade Road or something similar.

It's a bit further from Boone, but the Virginia Creeper Trail is WONDERFUL. It's a rails-to-trails conversion. Parts of it are steep, but most of it is suitable for the recreational cyclist. The best launching point is Damascus, VA, an easy day trip from Boone.

The Boone greenway is one of our faves. It's quite a few miles. Goes by the Watauga River. Try Boone's Great Greenway

Sorry, misread "biking" as "hiking".

Here is a link to the Railroad Grade Road in Todd that was previously mentioned:

If you are thinking about living there in the summers and like to bike, I would consider investing in an e-bike. We used them when on vacation in the German and Austrian Alps, and all I can say is "wow" - wonderful invention! It is not like a moped where you just sit and steer. In order to get the help from the motor, you have to be pedaling. How much help you get depends on how you set it. Ours had 3 settings. And it is electric so it is very quiet. It made getting up those Alpine-trails quite doable, yet still gave us a nice little workout without feeling like I was totally out of breath when getting to the top. E-bikes are wonderful for hilly areas if you are a casual biker.

I second the road that runs along the New River in Todd. You can also grab something to eat at the Todd General Store while you are there.

Todd General Store is, fortunately, closed.

There is a nice Food Truck across the road at River Girl.
