Once you are east of the blue ridge, your weather pattern changes dramatically. Travel 421 south past the 221 intersection and you will find sunshine, milder temps and easy access in and out. Travel a little further into Wilkes county and you are almost in flat land country. As snow travels east, it usually turns to rain east of the blue ridge and as the elevation drops.

Check out the live Cams of 321 through Boone and see the lane configuration for yourselves.

^^^ There are (2) lanes on each side. The middle 'lane' you see with the dotted lines is a turning lane for the intersection. It is not a driving lane.

It's a popular NC feature, and other states have that feature as well. They are trying to keep up.

Looks like 421 goes east and west. Are you talking about where 421 meets 221 in Boone?

Highway 421 signs label it as 421N or 421S. It goes kind of diagonally across the state.

421 is north-south, not east-west, although it does go more NNW-SSE. It runs from Bristol to Boone to Wilkesboro to Winston Salem to Siler City to Lillington to Wilmington. It's kind of like how I-85 North goes from Greensboro to Durham -- which is very much going east and a little south -- but then it curves up north to Petersburg.

The US highways and Interstates use the odd numbers for N/S and the even numbers for E/W, all across the country...
Some/many seem to run in a different compass direction, but the 'system' is basically close for the Odd/Even number assignments.

Right. But specifically i was trying to see where the area was that you were talking about.

Is it where 421 meets 221?

I believe she's talking about the Deep Gap area in eastern Watauga County where US 421 and US 221 split... near where the Blue Ridge Parkway crosses US 421.
