Irony! Yesterday after posing I got a correspondence from the NC Department of Ins.
I should have my policy within 2-3 days not just the cover sheet. Total time 7 months.
Also FB rates are very good because I have shopped and will be changing when my policy is up.
BUT with them they cover less then others that I have compared to. They cover no coin, gold, silver or any precious medals, most don't cover cash. Firearms and jewelry MUST have an appraisal less then 5 yrs old by an approved appraiser by THEM and are limited so if you more than a few pieces you have to get riders and appraisals.
We'll see!
Not analgous as we are Haywood County next door, but we have used a local agency since we got here in Sept 2001...
LN Davis in Waynesville is the writing agent, and our house, umbrella, and 3 cars/3 m'cycles are all under the same underwriter through that agent: Auto-Owners, based in Lansing, MI.
Like many, I have become complacent about shopping around, and as the local agent is a golf friend I will continue with them, (and that underwriting company), until they stiff me. I have never had a claim so it is unknown how 'they' would perform.
Our house ins goes up a tad every year and every couple years I call our local agent and have them reduce some of the line items and slightly raise the deductibles, as when I think of the all of the money I have paid for 'insurance' over the past 5 decades with no claims, it cranks me off. Interestingly, our 3 cars/3 m'cycle rates are quite low as is our $2 Mill umbrella.
Not apples to apples and good luck on finding better rates...my only suggestion is to email a dozen agents, see who responds and look carefully at the line items the underwriters often pack into the offered policy, eg ID theft, big contents amount, cost of replacement build overstated, (the foundation isn't buring up), et al.

motordavid, I had 3 homes insured by Auto Owners through Webb Insurance. I had to change coverage on 1 home and received an outrageous price from Webb. Webb told me that the new policy would be 3 times what I was paying, close to $10,000. It is an Airbnb and Webb wanted to put me into a commercial policy. I went to Allstate and they were able to save me close to $5000 for all 3 policies. Instead of putting me into a commercial policy they found a company that specializes in Airbnb policies. This policy is $2700. That was about a 40% reduction over Auto Owners for all of my homes.
Moral of the story (for me) thus far: PAY$ TO $HOP!
Following with interest as ... we called GEICO a little over a year ago about an umbrella since we have a small fleet of vehicles and 2 residential properties all with them, already.
The quote for the umbrella was so high I have kept the e-mail, open it occassionallly and just shake me head, wondering . . .

Absolutely! Have an agent that I will be going with when these policies are done!
The best I've found and have used (both car and house) for years is: NC Farm Bureau (agent: Matt Laughter) They have an office near Ingles at the corner of Howard Gap Rd. and Rt. 64 East. Best price and best service; I've recommended them often and everyone is very satisfied.
My policies were there for a very short time. They do have the nicest front desk staff of all their offices. They drop what they are doing to help ya. I've been thru every office in the county including the ones shut down over by Spartenburg Hwy., Not my doing but they seem to go thru agents at a record pace.
Just an update. Been 2-3 days and still no policy. I called the woman who I spoke with and she had some buffoon from F-B call me again and he would only tell me the policy was ordered and was shipped out. Called her back and she said a complaint was be forwarded. Whatever that means.
Looks like it's Attorney time just to get a policy, kind of silly isn't it?

No sensible adult human is going to believe this. But I received my policy from F.B. on Thursday. Opened it up and again not one place is there anything about what is cover or from what.
I called the F-B Specialist in Raleigh and she at first thought I was an idiot until I demanded she get a copy of the policy and read it to me word for word. There's a front page, a cover page, a voting rights page, three pages of definitions, a page with my equipment and that's it. Her response? Well it must be the rider companies fault. I DON'T CARE WHO'S FAULT IT IS I'VE BEEN PAYING YOU/F.B. I TOLD HER!
Well on Monday I have another number to call for an explanation.
