Now for my question.
I am a single female trying to decide between the Central Valley of CA and the Asheville/Charlotte area for relocation.
My job experience is predominantly in Hospitality/Event Planning in NYC/Long Island and I am very attracted to the visual magic and mystique of the Asheville area.
Charlotte is probably the best choice for all-around opportunity, but since my preference leans to Asheville, is the job market/pay scale really so out of kilter in comparison to the cost of living in this area as well as the limited job opportunities available, as per previous posts on this site.
I would be able to afford a modest home in the area with no mortgage due to the sale of my present home, but I must be careful not to be faced with only $10-$12 per hour jobs, however wonderful they may be. I am self-supporting and feel being faced with that would put me in too precarious a position.
Thanks to all for your time.

So glad you are finding us helpful

People in the south are generally very friendly and do like to help our neighbors when we can.
You are right, Charlotte is your best choice for overall opportunity. We have a growing convention scene, new NBA arena, the Panthers NFL stadium...just to name a few. Actually, guess I shouldn't neglect to mention NASCAR! These places all use many catering and event planner type services. May I ask what you consider the price you can pay for a "modest" home? I too love Asheville, (who doesn't???), but the job opportunities are not as plentiful there at all, and neither are the modest priced homes. Though there are outerlying communities I think you would like and possibly find affordable. I would suggest you check with the Asheville Chamber or Commerce and the Biltmore Estate and Winery for potentional jobs - just to get a feel for what might be available. If you are seriously attracted to going to California I would suggest you go on the city-data forum for California and see just how many people are fleeing that ridiculously overpriced state

I think you would love NC, based on how many of us do! Good luck to you in your decision.
