As the medical field is our biggest source of employement... Asheville is MANY colleges, universities, and technical schools around that you should be able to find a job in that atmosphere. Also, I keep a close eye on job related websites, and I do see event planning/fundraiser type jobs come up... especially for non-profits and for the city of asheville (have you tried there direct website?). I honestly believe that if you like the WNC area, everything else will fall into place for you.

Thanks for the info. I guess I haven't tried the city website - never thought of that. I am subscribed to a few job websites. What is the approx. cost of apartments there? I don't want to be looking at jobs that I can't afford to take. I have worked here for 12 years so for a single person I am doing OK (not great but not starving). I think that is the scariest part of moving - not knowing how I will do financially.

First I am a native of Translyvania County and have been for 61 years. I do know (as I said) many many natives who do carry weapons including myself. I at no time said any presentage of persons carrying them. As far a gun ownership you'll be surprised who owns guns registered or not. Most every native will own guns either for hunting or just ownership for protection. It's not unusual for neighbors to fire their weapons here in my community, because I have neighbors who hunt. No one calls law enforcement because this is a way of live here. I also don't live in a gated community of tree huggers and animal lovers.
I will bet you however if you were a native you would have more knowledge of what goes on OFF main street. I can take you today to places where people live and you would be very uncomfortable and feel unsafe. Plus, you would say I didn't know anyone in WNC lived in such poor conditions. I can take you where until the last couple years children had to be taken on 4 wheelers 2 to 3 to meet school buses because the road was impassable for an automobile. If you think I am B.S. you then e-mail me and I will take you to show you the real WNC. Not your gated community.

I guess it all depends on what type of job you are looking for! all the counties have all the social services and city services, there are lots of hospitals, and there are community colleges and universities near here (I live in henderson am 56 and on disability and I feel safe living here.) ask some more questions beforeyou give up on the mountains..you may find theres work for you after all..depennding on what you are looking for! jenna I forgot to say that I have only been here a year..but I love it and am glad that I moved here!

I already know what I want - finding it is the hard part. A safe “smallish” town where the people are friendly and I can find a job and not put myself in debt just to pay my monthly bills. I am not looking to live like a queen; I just want to be near people that are actually nice. Oh yea, and warmer weather!!! Is that anywhere near where you live? Of course it would be nice to find singles around 35-48 years old.
