Our mountain house has a great deck that wraps around three sides. You can sit out there and look and listen to the waterfall in the creek. There's no roof and I don't want one. I want the sunshine. There are no bugs to speak of so don't need it to be screened. If I want to be inside I go inside. The kitchen is full of floor to ceiling windows, so in bad or chilly weather you can be inside in comfort.
I am interested in the Asheville area, and I too have noticed an inordinate number of craftsman style houses. It's a particular older style from a particular period, and when you look at older homes in the region, they don't all look like that at all - they are more varied. There are dozens of older home styles that could be used if you want a traditional home (which I also favor). Seems like for the past 20 years though, that's all that gets built, except for some modern geometric houses.

Most likely because that style sells very well here in the mountain settings; and, if there is an upper level with bedrooms, baths etc., the costs of building are less. Land is pricey here as are construction costs per sq. ft. Building in the mountains is much different than in the flatlands.
I think over time the design in newer homes in this area is going to reflect more modern mountain style design, such as an open floor plan in den/kitchen. Recently had a very successful agent in the area tell me that many older homes need to be updated to make them more desirable to buyers.
