This is for the outdoorsy types living in Western NC. What do you do in the winter? is it mild enough to hike, bike, fish? Temp yesterday in Maggie Valley was 43 degrees, which sounded a whole lot better than 11 degrees here. I am not much in to skiing anymore (here anyway) and don't enjoy being out in the cold unless it's above freezing. I do understand that WNC gets cold and snow but it's not the deep cold winter of the NE. So, do you use winter for down time? have indoor hobbies? still do your outdoor activities? Someone suggested I should plan my visit there during the winter, since I want to get away from a long winter, and that made sense in a way Hope you are all well.
I walk with the dogs most mornings, unless it's below 20 degrees or extremely windy. I know I take advantage of the weather when it warms a bit to get out and do more outdoor things, usually walking or hiking. But even on cool days, if we can get away, we take day trips to other areas of WNC like Brevard or up to Boone. There are nice things to do, if it's too cold, you can wander the shops in downtown Brevard or Hendersonville or drive up Grandfather Mountain, even if you don't walk across the bridge. It's still a neat drive.
I hike, road and mountain bike here several times a week. I am from the Midwest originally so even the worst weather here is cake compared to what I am accustomed to.
Biking in 25F is balmy compared to -25f.
We had a little snow last week and hiking and mountain biking was fun in it but it didn't last long.
I guess it is all a matter of perspective and what you are accustomed to.

it's hard to increase outdoor time this time of year simply because of less daylight time. However, this is my favorite time of year to get out and hike. The heat doesnt bother me as much as it used to, but I still prefer this time of year for hiking and trail running.
We walked on the closed Parkway yesterday, it was wonderful!!!
