I did post a similar thread on another forum, and I will quote another poster and myself below, in case anyone has any additional thoughts they'd like to share:

First, a helpful post by BC1960:

salt of the earth/redneck/white trash.

So yes; "salt of the earth" it is - and I don't say this for the purpose of offending anyone, but I much prefer an area on the west side of, or west of, Raleigh, that is dominated by Southerners.

Why Southern? Because as much as good people can be found anywhere in the world, and of any culture, I much prefer the laid back posture that small town Southerners take. Some people don't care for it; I love it

I do see the earthy aspect of Asheville as a plus (especially restaurants, markets, and activities that cater to this group), so long as it doesn't lead to the excessive regulation and taxes of what we had back in NY.

I'll direct you towards Bristol TN/VA. The Dukes would love having a Nascar track in their back yard. Bristol is the birthplace of bluegrass music. You could live nearby on a lake within view of a mountain / Appalachian trail. There's a bit of the crunchy hippie element nearby in Johnson city.

I too am boggled by the idea that the Dukes would want to live in or anywhere close to Asheville.
