It is already such a cluster in those routes that will be torn up, It will be interesting to see how they pull it off. It it goes like that bridge on I-26 that never gets completed, you won't be able to get to anywhere in a reasonable time.
Updated to repair several broken links and update dates and costs.
There are several major construction projects coming to I-26 in the Asheville region, and some of them will be occurring at the same time and last for years. We're talking over $1 BILLION in highway construction once everything is finished. While this is good news for some and many years in the making, residents, visitors, and those passing through the area will be facing years of construction and traffic headaches. Construction will start in 2019.
I've attempted to summarize the details of the projects into one location for convenience. Additional information, including detailed maps, can be found on the projects' websites.
Projects include (mostly in chronological order; some sections of the projects will be constructed at later dates):
Rehabilitating the bridges over the Green River between Flat Rock and Saluda
Widening I-26 from I-40 in Asheville to U.S. 25 in Flat Rock
Improving Future I-26 north of Asheville to Interstate standards
Reconfiguring the I-26/I-40/I-240 interchange in Asheville
Constructing new bridges over the French Broad River in Asheville
Green River Bridges Rehabilitation Project Number: 15BPR.20 Proposed Let Date: 01/15/2019 06/18/2019 Construction Timeline: 2019-? Construction Estimate: $9.6 million $13.2 million Location: Henderson County, between Flat Rock and Saluda (MM 55.5-56.0)
The I-26 bridges over the Green River (Peter Guice Memorial Bridge) are fifty years old and rated structurally deficient. The superstructure will be demolished and rebuilt, and the two structures will be connected, with room for an additional travel lane in each direction. However, there are currently no plans for widening I-26 on either side of the bridges.
I-26 Widening Project Numbers: I-4700 (Buncombe County); I-4400 (Henderson County) Project Website:https://www.ncdot.gov/projects/i26Widening/ Sections Funded: I-4700A, I-4700B; I-4400BA, I-4400BB, I-4400C Sections Unfunded: I-4400A Proposed Let Date:I-4700 (Sections A and B combined and accelerated): 05/21/2019; I-4400C, I-400BB: 06/18/2019 Funded Construction Timeline: I-4700, I-4400BB, I-4400C: 2019-2021; I-4400BA: 2023-2026 Funded Construction Estimate: $367.9 million $408.5 million Project Breakdown Maps:I-4700, I-4400 Section Descriptions:
I-4700B - I-40 TO NC 146 - LONG SHOALS ROAD (EXIT 37)
I-4700A - NC 146 - LONG SHOALS ROAD (EXIT 37) TO NC 280 (EXIT 40)
I-4400C - NC 280 (EXIT 40) TO US 25 BUSINESS (EXIT 44)

I-4400BA - US 64 (EXIT 49) INTERCHANGE
I-4400A - US 64 (EXIT 49) TO US 25 (EXIT 54)
I-26 will be widened from I-40 in Asheville to U.S. 25 east of Flat Rock (Exit 54). Approximately 13 miles will be widened from four to eight lanes from I-40 to U.S. 25 at Fletcher (Exit 44), and 10 miles will be widened to six lanes from Exit 44 to U.S. 25 at Exit 54. Interchanges will be revised at U.S. 25 Exit 44 (diverging diamond interchange) and U.S. 64 Exit 49 in Hendersonville (partial cloverleaf instead of the current full cloverleaf).
Construction will begin in 2019 for the 18 miles from I-40 to U.S. 64. The U.S. 64 interchange will be revised from 2023 to 2026. Widening I-26 from U.S. 64 to U.S. 25 (Exit 54) is funded in the draft 2020-2029 STIP, with construction scheduled to begin in 2025.
A-0010AA - SR 1781 (BROADWAY STREET) - EXIT 25 IN ASHEVILLE TO US 25 (Exit 19)
A-0010AB - US 25 TO SR 2207 (Exit 15)
A-0010AC - SR 2207 (Exit 15) TO SOUTH OF SR 2148 (Exit 13)
U.S. 19/23 (Future I-26) will be upgraded to Interstate standards north of the proposed I-26 Connector in Buncombe County. This includes potentially adding new lanes, replacing bridges, widening shoulders, and pavement rehabilitation. Currently, only the section from Asheville to U.S. 25 (Exit 19) in Weaverville is funded. Once all sections are upgraded from Asheville to Madison County, the "Future" designation for I-26 can be removed from this route and it will officially become I-26.
I-26 Connector Project Number: I-2513 Project Website:https://www.ncdot.gov/projects/I26Connector/ Sections Funded: I-2513B, I-2513C Sections Unfunded: I-2513A Proposed Let Date: 06/16/2020 (all funded sections) Funded Construction Timeline: 2020-2024 Funded Construction Estimate: $435.4 million $648.8 million Project Breakdown Map:https://connect.ncdot.gov/projects/p...aps/I-2513.pdf Section Descriptions:

I-2513B - NORTH OF SR 3548 (HAYWOOD ROAD) TO EXISTING US 19/US 23/US 70
I-2513C - I-26/I-40/I-240 INTERCHANGE
This is a massive project, with an estimated 200+ relocations required. The I-26 Connector will connect I-26 south of Asheville to I-26 north of Asheville. Section A will widen and modernize I-240/I-26 through west Asheville (including interchanges). Section B will construct new bridges on new location for I-26 and I-240 across the French Broad River, and convert the current bridges into a local avenue. Section C will reconfigure the I-26/I-40/I-240 interchange. Sections B and C should begin construction in 2020.
Section A is funded in the draft 2020-2029 STIP, with construction scheduled to also begin in 2020.

The NCDOT will hold an open house and public hearing regarding the proposed I-26 Connector and Riverside Drive widening. Preliminary designs for the preferred alternative have been completed and are available for public review and comment.
The open house will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 from 4:00 to 6:30 PM, with a formal public hearing following at 7:00 PM.
It would definitely be better than the current system where almost everybody moves into the open lane well in advance of the restriction but there's always an ******* or two who races ahead in the soon-to-be-closed lane to push his way (it's always a guy) into the open lane at the last minute.
Ain't progress great !! Some one will always be put out , always get pissed but these projects do need to happens . People keep having meets to debate where they want to see this road project move to so it does not effect THEM but others will be effected , get pissed and want to relay and debate the process again . HA and delaying whats going to happen any how .
That is going to be ugly, and dangerous with the steep grades approaching these bridges from both directions. The backups will be bad enough, but trucks not slowing enough and loosing its brakes will be a huge threat.
We go to Costco in Spartenburg every month or so, guess when this starts we will be going to the Greenville SC Costco.
Totally agree and will be avoiding that at all costs. Traveling 25 and 225 is going to get interesting and that's my normal route to Greenville (and Costco).

Truck traffic could utilize United States Route 25 and South Carolina Highway 11. South Carolina Highway 11 has a speed trap in Campobello, South Carolina. South Carolina Highway 290 is not four lanes from United States Route 25 to Greer, South Carolina, yet. Truck traffic will be bad.
From what I know, only I-26 westbound will be reduced to one lane during a few phases of construction, which is different from what I originally reported last summer. Eastbound will have two lanes maintained throughout construction. Lanes on both sides will be narrowed to 11' at times.
