Rutherford County, Forest City and Rutherfordton are two GREAT small and VERY safe towns. BOTH well-run communities...and lots of family-fun things to do year round.

Easy access to all larger city amenities.

Let me know if you need any other info or are looking for a particular price range in a home. No, I am not a realtor...just an experienced northerner who knows where to look and NOT to look for the best deals.

Default Sylva NC - Jackson Co. Jobs/Rentals

Hi - I am checking out the scene in and/or near Sylva. Do you have any idea what standard rentals cost? I have access to a rental owned by an aunt, but have no idea what is fair in this area. It's an older (100+ yrs) cabin outside of Sylva.

Also, where should I be looking for work opportunities in the outlying areas? What about educational opps? Thanks for any info you can provide.

DB

I like the Franklin area but rarely see anyone posting about it. Wondered why?

Default Lots of Choices in WNC

Jackson, Macon, Swain, Clay, and Cherokee Counties are peppered with small towns in the farthest reaches of the state. They each have their own character. They're a little more remote than the towns surrounding Asheville, making them affordable. Just over two hours will get you to Atlanta, Chattanooga or Knoxville and from forty minutes to two hours to Asheville. Jackson has Western North Carolina University and Southwestern Community College. Macon has a new Southwestern Community College Campus. Sylva has a charming downtown and there will soon be a great new park, pavilion, and farmer's market area. Franklin is wonderful. Murphy and Hayesville are catching up. I sound like the Chamber of Commerce, but just love this area.

Barber's Orchard is built on a long time apple orchard, and as such the ground and the ground water are toxic. There was a huge EPA cleanup there several years ago, but only in areas where homes existed.

Apple orchards are unfit to live on or near due to decades of very toxic pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and who knows what else that was liberally used.

Do you know of any 55+ communities in Western NC that are not terribly expensive?
