Lake Lure is man made.

You can absolutely go tubing on the French Broad River: https://www.frenchbroadoutfitters.com/

Pretty good tubing at Deep Creek in Bryson City. $4 all day tube rentals with a great area for camping or a picnic. A little over an hour from AVL to the west.

In our experience tubing on the French Broad can be iffy. Water can be pretty dirty with known sewage outlets running to it and a sewage treatment facility directly on it just north of town. The tubing outfitters will also charge you up to $20 per person to float down the river which is crazy. Pretty much for unknowing tourists wanting an experience as the longtime locals we’ve spoken to tend to avoid it. Good luck either way!

^^^ This. not enough $$ in the world to get me into the dirty French Broad. A friend does a girls float trip on the Green River every summer and the pictures she shares make me want to try it - looks beautiful.

The quality of the water of the French Broad varies drastically, depending on the timing and volume of the last rain. https://www.theswimguide.org/beach/7160?set_language=en has up-to-date water quality guides for different places along the river. They do their own testing so they get the information out there fast.

There are no natural lakes anywhere around Asheville; or western NC for that matter. Lake Jocassee in SC is very nice but access points are few and very crowded on summer weekends.

There's lots of great swimming areas here, some are well known (Sliding Rock, French Broad) and many are off grid. Every one, except for the FB on occasion have been clean and we've had no issues with illness. Avoid Ledges River Park near Alexander (FB north of AVL) as it's been the dirtiest place we visited so far in the area.

Lake Lure and surrounding are actually nice places to spend the day. Although the lake is man made (1925), the Broad River flows through it so we're ok with it. The drive in, out and around the lake is pretty curvy, but not too bad. Come in from 64 during apple season and visit Stepp's (LINK) while there to have a fun side trip while visiting the lake.

We're water people ourselves (our dog even more so) and find new favorites every week. Many of them we've had practically all to ourselves.
